What Your Mother Never Told You

A Continuing Series of Articles by the Experts:

By:  Staness Jonekos; Author, speaker, advocate for women's health,

wellness and empowerment. Co-Author: "The Menopause Makeover"

www.MenopauseMakeover.com

My mother never told me a thing about menopause.  She never had hot flashes, night sweats, loss of libido or weight gain.  How did Mom escape going through "the change?" bride and mom

While growing up I noticed my mom always had a difficult time with her period - she went through countless boxes of Kotex pads and super-sized tampons to manage an irregular and heavy period. She suffered from abdominal pain and cramps, and was, no doubt, an emotional mess from constantly feeling miserable.  In her 40s, she endured a few outpatient procedures and then, finally, a hysterectomy.

As a teenager I did not completely understand Mom's journey, but after her surgery she was a new person!  It was the first time I saw her completely happy.  She went back to college, earned her Master's degree, started a new career and enjoyed traveling.

My take-away lesson was, "Turn 40 and become happy".  So you can imagine my surprise when, at the age of 47, menopause slammed into my life full speed ahead with no sign of stopping.  Weight gain, loss of libido, hot flashes and night sweats made my life miserable. I was the classic cliché, "Is it hot in here, or is it me?".

After a 30-year career in television as an executive producer, writer and director, menopause affected my ability to work for my current, not to mention my favorite, boss, Oprah Winfrey.  My world was falling apart professionally, physically, and emotionally. Worse yet, it affected my relationship to my now husband, who had just proposed.  Let's just say, I was in no mood for a honeymoon.

Mom had shared no words of wisdom because she did not go through a "natural" menopause.  Having a hysterectomy and being on estrogen therapy (ET) actually put an end to a lifetime suffering from endometriosis.  Mom's female surgeon informed her that endometriosis was the culprit to her monthly problems.

My reproductive history was a different story.  At the age of 20, my surgeon discovered an extreme case of endometriosis and I had two orange-sized ovarian cysts removed. As a result, I started taking birth control pills which allowed me to live without the menstrual difficulties my mom had endured for so many years.  After being on birth control pills for over 25 years, my doctor suggested I stop using them in order to do a FSH blood test. This test would determine my reproductive cycle prior to getting married.

That decision lit the fire that launched my living hell called menopause. When I terminated the hormone therapy my body was accustomed to from the birth control pills, my body reacted as if it had had a hysterectomy...an "artificial" hysterectomy, if you will.   As you can see, my mother and I had very different reproductive journeys.

Today I am on low dose hormone therapy (HT) as is Mom, and we've never been happier.  We both benefited from the latest women's health science and are both good candidates for HT (i.e. healthy weight, active and no risk factors).  Everyone is different, but in our case...."Like mother, like daughter."

Heidi's Book Review

The Menopause Makeover - by Staness Jonekos and Wendy Klein, M.D.

If you were 46 years old and getting married for the very first time, while going through the roller coaster of menopause, would you take 12 weeks to take charge of your health and happiness and get your body into shape?books

That's what Staness Jonekos did with the help of Dr. Wendy Klein and together they organized it into a fun format creating an easy to follow 12-week planner called The Menopause Makeover.

Even after everything I learned while making our movie "Hot Flash Havoc" I found Staness' book an easy to understand explanation of the science behind what is happening to your menopausal body and what you can do about it. The book has wonderful charts and graphs to get you actively involved in your own transformation.   We all need tools to guide us and this is a great one.

If you want a "kick start" for inspiration: go to YouTube and watch The Menopause Makeover by Staness Jonekos. It's a 3-minute joyous summary of her journey to health and happiness.

Documentary Reveals the
Good, Bad, Ugly of Menopause

We are proud to announce that Hot Flash Havoc makes ABC NEWS with a feature article about the movie!

By Mikaela Conley (@mikaelaconley)
March 13, 2012

"When I think of menopause, I think of hate, pure clean hate," one woman said in the new documentary "Hot Flash Havoc."
"I told my wife if she goes through menopause again, we're getting a divorce," a husband said.
Nevertheless, "you're very lucky to reach menopause," another woman said. "If you don't reach it, you have some troubles."
"Hot Flash Havoc," a film of "menopausal proportions," is a documentary meant to examine menopausal symptoms, reveal the history and society's view on menopause and even question the results from an ongoing National Institutes of Health initiative, which, in 2002, discouraged women from taking estrogen plus progesterone to treat symptoms of menopause.
For some women, menopause symptoms are much more than the occasional hot flash. Depression, low libido, night sweats and panic attacks are only a few of the many indications that storm through the body of a menopausal woman.
The controversial documentary will be released to the public March 30.
The beginning of the documentary creates a playful dialogue on the experiences and expectations of menopause and menstruation.
For one woman, the roundabout way in which she was told about her feminine health left her confused for decades. "Your Aunt Tilly is going to visit you once a month, and she's going to hang around for about 30 years," the interviewee described how her menstrual cycle was explained. "When Aunt Tilly dies, you'll know about it cause she won't come around no more. Who the hell is Aunt Tilly?"
The majority of the film documents the benefits of estrogen replacement therapy, commonly taken to curb hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. It particularly criticizes a NIH Women's Health Initiative study, which, in 2002, found that women taking estrogen were at higher risk of certain cancers and heart disease. Researchers halted the clinical trial altogether in 2002 because of the noted increased risk.
Filmmakers and menopause experts interviewed in the documentary argue that the 2002 study results were misrepresented, and led millions of menopausal women to unnecessarily stop taking hormones that otherwise curbed debilitating symptoms sometimes associated with menopause. No money from pharmaceutical companies was used to create the film, according to producers.
And research released last week in the Lancet reignited this debate when a study found that estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy might lower the risk of breast cancer for some postmenopausal women. While the findings were specific to women who have had a hysterectomy, have no increased risk of breast cancer and no increased risk of strokes and blood clots, advocates of hormone therapy welcomed the results. . . . . . . . . .
