Happy New Year from the

"HOT FLASH HAVOC TEAM"

A New Year is unfolding and we are dedicated to continuing our commitment to bring you useful educational content and helpful hints to enhance your lives in 2012.

Dear Hot Flashers,

2011 found me flying to 28 cities in the US and Canada to screen the upcoming movie to as many audiences as possible, to prepare the final cut for the Theaters.   It was a great year working with many organizations and winning national awards.

Now that we are armed with the final cut, we are rolling out a new "Hot Flash Havoc" platform for 2012.  At the end of the first quarter of this year we will be doing theatrical releases in major markets throughout the United States. HOT FLASH HAVOC will update you on cities and theaters as they are opening.  We begin in Los Angeles.

We are also creating a special programming for HOT FLASH HAVOC events that will be available to smaller communities and health organizations.  So call us if you are interested in a special event.

We believe good health starts with being informed health consumers so you and your physician become a more effective team.  Incorporating the lessons learned from "Hot Flash Havoc" the movie and being re-motivated each month through our newsletters will guide you in making decisions that will keep you vital and energized into the 2nd phase of your life.

We're dedicated to leading the movement to change women's lives for the better.

Here's to you in 2012,

Menstruation - The First Time For Me

I grew up in a culture where we didn't talk about sexual things. When I got my first period, I had no idea what was happening to me and I ran to tell my mother.  She acted embarrassed and told me, "You are now a woman and that's how it's going to be." She gave me some pads to wear and that was all the information I was given!  A friend of mine, Jennifer, had an even worse experience. When her period came, she worried she'd be bleeding every day for the rest of her life!  A few days later when the bleeding stopped, she was elated, but then devastated when it came back a month later. Of course, our friends filled us in on what was going on. I didn't buy the "being a woman" thing, because it didn't feel very feminine to have to deal with the cramps and the embarrassing mess, especially when I would bleed through my clothes and have an "accident" in school. It is no wonder a woman's menstrual period is often called "the curse."

I remember having very painful menstrual cramps each month and having my doctor trivialize my complaints .......................... read the rest of the article:

Dr. Johnson has written a guidebook to empower women with knowledge that allows them to be accountable, take charge of their health and actively participate in decision-making with their own physicians.

"Outliving Your Ovaries" is written by endocrinologist Dr. Marina Johnson, medical director of The Institute of Endocrinology and Preventive Medicine. Dr. Johnson, a pharmacist and a physician, describes a wide body of research showing that pharmaceutical topical bioidentical hormones are safer than the most commonly prescribed hormones. Menopause Myth Busting
Night Sweats or Hot Flashes?
MORE MENOPAUSE MYTH BUSTING:
YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Thanks to our friends at NAMS (The North American Menopause Society)

1. Myth: Most postmenopausal women aren't very interested in or satisfied by sex.

Fact:

A large new study of US women ages 50 to 79 found that nearly two-thirds were satisfied with their sexual activity. Of those who were dissatisfied, 57 percent would prefer more sexual activity and only 8 percent would prefer less. Many women were sexually active through their 70s, and the main reason women in the study were not sexually active was the lack of a partner................. read more

Difference between Night Sweats

and Hot Flashes

Night Sweats and Hot Flashes are health conditions linked to women, particularly during the stage of menopause. These conditions generally affect 80% of all women. Nevertheless, despite the prevalence of these conditions, many people are unable to differentiate them.

Hot flashes:
This condition refers to the unexpected and quick heat sensation that is experienced in a woman's upper body. Hot flashes, in general, are felt from your toes, rising to the chest, abdomen and back. This condition makes the neck, face, torso, upper arms become red and it may cause perspiration.

Hot flashes occur as the body's reaction to the deficiency of estrogen in the skin's blood vessels.  Blood vessels then dilate this causes an enhanced local blood circulation. This does not mean that estrogen has been lost; instead this condition is caused by the sudden reduction of the crucial estrogen hormone.
The hypothalamus, which is the body's thermostat, gets confusing cold or hot signals. This uncertain state causes irregular contraction of the blood vessels.Hence, the hot flashes start and the body reacts by sweating.

Night sweats:
This condition can be explained as a hot flash episode that occurs during the night. However, it may be even more distressing when it occurs during daytime. Some women experience sleep disturbance that then results in insomnia because of the trouble of regaining sleep once again. This may advance to forgetfulness and tiredness. It occurs occasionally without a notable underlying medical cause.
The indications of these night sweats are intense heat, nausea, headaches, chills, irregular heartbeat and flushing. When an individual is experiencing this condition, it is recommended that she or he use cotton sheets.  Bottom line; hot flashes occur unexpectedly, whereas night sweats generally occur at night.
