"WHAT YOUR MOTHER NEVER TOLD YOU" | |
Dear Hot Flashers,
Even though F. Scott Fitzgerald was quoted saying "There are no second acts in life", we know he did not understand women. We believe that your SECOND ACT is when you get the opportunity for making use of your wisdom, your sexuality and your femininity. This is the time when you take charge of making the most of your life.
Now, to help you in that regard - - We are pleased to begin our new newsletter from Hot Flash Havoc called "What Your Mother Never Told You!"
Each month one of our experts will give you important information about perimenopause, menopause and other topics that will give you valuable insight into changes women experience. Starting with SEX and continuing on to everything your mother never told you. We will keep you updated with information from our national sponsors on what's new in women's health research and other important issues. We will arm you with information we all need to make positive health changes in all our lives.
I made this movie because a doctor's misdiagnosis caused me to go into early menopause with symptoms that were just about everything except hot flashes. I had joint pain that made it hard to walk every morning, headaches that prevented focus, mood swings that could go into rages, depression, large fast weight gain, heart palpitations, hair loss and more. For three years I went to doctors, medicine men and women's health clinics trying to find the answers to these various health care problems that seemed to have come out of nowhere. Each doctor tried to put me on drugs for these symptoms. I however, could not accept that I needed drugs for something that appeared almost overnight and for 3 years pursued answers and got different diagnoses from each doctor or clinic. Not one of them suggested menopause.
Finally, I found a doctor who was lecturing in Aspen, Colorado Dr. Elizabeth Vliet. I instantly knew I had found someone who was describing my life. I left the lecture and called her office to make an appointment. I found she was booked for the next 4 and half months. I searched her out after the lecture and told her how important the information she was lecturing about was and asked how could people everywhere get this information. She said, "Someone needs to make a documentary about menopause". So I said, "If you will see me next week I will make the documentary." Well, she did see me the next week and she asked the right questions and she ordered the right tests and she got my hormones back in balance. I got my life back and my children got their mother back. If I did not make the documentary I thought we are just going to continue to get misinformation. It then took three and a half years of hard work but yes, I did make the movie.
So now women everywhere are invited to come to an event and watch the movie or get this valuable information on DVD. There is more to do. We need to get the word out to women everywhere.
You, as a "Hot Flasher" are already on the right track.
Please write to us and ask us your questions, we will get an expert to answer them. Let us know of any new information or stories you would like to share and you may make our next newsletter.
Thanks for "Joining the Havoc" and we look forward to bringing you the best "Second Act" you can have.

NEWS FROM THE SOCIETY FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH RESEARCH

SWHR is a national non-profit organization based in Washington D.C., and is widely recognized as the thought leader in women's health research, particularly how sex differences influence health. SWHR's mission is to improve the health of all women through advocacy, education and research. Visit SWHR's website at www.swhr.org for more information. Remember, this is your official "watchdog" for women.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one killer of women in the United States. Although scientists have discovered demonstrable sex differences, treatment options remain the same. In response to this important issue, the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR) and WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease released the long awaited 2011 10Q Report: Advancing Women's Heart Health through Improved Research, Diagnosis and Treatment on June 21, 2011.
The 2011 10Q Report is an update to the 2006 10Q Report that identified the top 10 unanswered research questions concerning the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in women. Because these and other questions still lack answers, SWHR and WomenHeart are issuing an updated 2011 report.
- Over 420,000 women die annually of CVD
- More women than men die each year of heart disease
- Experts estimate that one in two women will die of heart disease or stroke per year
There are known sex differences in symptoms and treatment of CVD, yet medical treatment of women has not changed substantially nor has it resulted in appropriate research into these distinct sex differences. The 10Q Report is a call to action to members of Congress, administration officials, researchers, health care providers, and women.

LET'S TALK SEX!

Ladies do not give up on having a healthy sex life. If the following article hits home with you; if you have lack of interest or desire for sex, pain or inability to have an orgasm, you should make an appointment with your primary care physician or gynecologist ask your questions and be specific. The answers begin with the right questions and asking the right health care provider. If you don't get the answers you need, seek out a new doctor. Heidi
IS YOUR SEX DRIVE NORMAL?
(and what does 'normal' mean?)
Each of us is so different, that it is often difficult to define what behaviors fall into the category of "normal." Our different backgrounds, experiences and our biological make-up, makes us each unique individuals (vive la difference!). This variation holds true for many things, including a woman's sex drive - everyone's is a little different and it even fluctuates within the same woman over time.
As a woman's life unfolds, her sex life, including her level of desire for sex may vary as well. For instance, as her career and family grow, perhaps demanding more of her time and energy, her idea of what constitutes a "normal" sex drive may change as well. The intensity or frequency of her desires may not be the same as she felt when she was younger and had more time and energy or was in the throes of a new relationship. This may translate into her noticing that she often finds herself thinking about her 'to-do' list and not about sex. However, even with these changes, it's important to note that her sex life still has a tremendous impact on her personal life and her overall health.
While for some women, these changes in desire are modest and do not impact her overall sense of sexuality and satisfaction, for others the decrease has a huge impact - - it can feel like her sexual desire is nearly gone and sexual thoughts or daydreams are rare. This loss of desire is not just an acceptable consequence of a busy lifestyle or aging but is actually a medically condition called Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder, or HSDD, the most common Female Sexual Dysfunction.
While many of us are familiar with sexual disorders in men (think ED and thank Viagra), few realize that sexual problems also affect women. The reality is, female sexual problems affect over an estimated 40 percent of adult women and can present itself at any stage of their lives. HSDD, which is the persistent lack of sexual desire that causes distress, is one of six identified female sexual disorders.
HSDD is the most commonly reported Female Sexual Disorder. In a recent large study (over 31,000 adult women) nearly one in 10 women reported low desire with sexually-related personal distress, and this distressing decreased desire was not secondary to other chronic medical conditions or medication use. The consequences of HSDD can affect more than just a woman's sexual activity. Studies show that the condition's burden can extend well beyond her sexuality, resulting in detrimental effects to other aspects of her life. These can include difficulty with personal and social relationships, a poor self-image, mood instability and even depression.
As a health care professional, I see firsthand how HSDD and Female Sexual Disorders in general negatively affect women's lives. These women come into my office devastated. They tell me that they used to enjoy experiencing desire (regardless of sexual activity). They now miss the sexual thoughts and physical hunger that signal sexual drive. And without the desire, they are often less likely to initiate a sexual encounter or be receptive to a partner's suggestion which not only causes them personal distress but may result in significant interpersonal difficulties.
A woman's sexual health is an important part of her overall health and well-being and is a significant predictor of her perceived quality of life. It is normal for a woman's desires and sex drive to fluctuate given all that life throws her way. However, a significant lack of desire, and/or absence of sexual thoughts or fantasies that causes distress, may be a sign that this "normal" variation is actually a sexual disorder worthy of assessment and treatment.
What is a "normal" sex life for a woman? It's different for everyone, but it comes down to whatever she feels is right for her and her relationship. It's not about how often a woman engages in sexual activity, but rather that her desires remain at an acceptable level to her and that she is satisfied with the joy, the intimacy and the pleasure it brings.
