Cadette through Ambassador Girl Scouts who have sold 750 or more boxes of cookies are invited to a Universal Studios Hollywood trip, July 8-9, leaving Friday afternoon and returning late Saturday. The adventure is free for Cali Girls, yet they will need spending and food money. The deadline to register is June 24, by 5:00pm. FRESNO METROPOLITAN FLOOD CONTROL DISTRICT GRANT "It's in the bag!"

A recently received grant will help girls learn the importance of keeping the San Joaquin Riverway clean. Girls in the Outreach Program will learn about habitats along the waterway, why it's important to keep storm drains clean, and the effect of plastic bags on our communities and the earth. Girls will receive materials from the Flood Control District and share the information with their families.

 

 

Traditional Troops are also a part of the grant...and are invited to take part in River Clean Up Days. See the article below. If your Troop participates please send us photos and stories so we can sing your praises!

 

TROOPS NEEDED FOR SAN JOAQUIN RIVER CLEAN UP DAY: Sign up now

Service Units and individual Troops are needed to participate in the Global Coastal Cleanup Day, September 17. San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust will lead land and canoe cleanup teams in an effort to provide a clean river. To participate, contact Lina Valenzuela of the Conservation Trust at linav@riverparkway.org . Ask about building owl nesting and bat roosting boxes. A certification course to clean up by canoe, is available through the San Joaquin River Stewardship Program. Contact Steve Starcher, Director, at 559-289-8874. For guidelines as listed in the Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints for Canoeing, contact Training Specialist Michelle Loyd at 800-590-8653 x 200.

It is with sadness that we inform the Council of the passing of longtime Girl Scout leader Erma Guentz, (1935-2011). Erma led for 12 years in what was then the Service Unit known as "Castle Glen" in the former Joshua Tree Council. Our kind thoughts and sympathies are extended to her daughter Robin Norton and family.

TROOP 2534 "COURAGEOUS AND STRONG" FASHION SHOW

Troop 2534 Fashion ShowRegina Maxwell, leader of Troop 2534 in Service Unit 67 submitted this photo of their new Troop of Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors who worked on their Courageous and Strong Petal.  "We held a fashion show for our girls' families. Each girl shared their favorite outfit and had previously filled out a brief questionnaire letting us know their favorite activity, age, school, grade and what they would like to be when they grow up. One of our very involved fathers, Mr. Rodriquez, was master of ceremonies. He enlightened the audience with the girls' info, added music, and was a big hit! GIRL SCOUTS UNVEILS "TOGETHER COUNTS'-FAMILIES CAN WORK TOGETHER TO FIGHT OBESITY, LOG THEIR PROGRESS, AND COMPARE WITH OTHER COMMUNITES

The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and Girl Scouts of the USA have launched a national campaign called Together Counts, encouraging families to eat meals and engage in physical activities together. Families can track their progress and compare it with their community and others across America. The program brings together 160 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, a professional sports organization, NGOs, trade associations, and the U.S. Army to do their part to help families reduce obesity, especially childhood obesity. TROOP 2296 TO EARN AUTISM AWARENESS BADGETroop 2296 works with Autistic Class 

Lisa Peacock of Troop 2296 submitted this photo of the Troop with Forkner School's autism class. In an effort to learn more about autism the girls spent an afternoon with the dynamic children. They played games, colored, read books, and topped of the special time with Girl Scout Cookies and milk. The girls will finish earning their Autism Awareness Badge after they spend one of their lunch recesses volunteering with the students once more before the end of the school year. The Troop is grateful for the support of the principal.

TROOP 3407 PROJECT FOR BAKERSFIELD'S JAMISON CENTER/MARCH OF DIMES

TROOP 3407 BRINGS EASTERTroop 3407 of Service Unit 643 purchased 100 candy bars from the Bakersfield DMV Business Center's March of Dimes March for Babies team. The Troop used the candy to make up Easter bags with handmade cards for the unplaced foster children at Bakersfield's Jameson Children's Center which cares for more than 200 children each month, the majority of whom are under the age of 12.  Back row (left to right): Aubri, Chloe, and Mackenzie.
