USATF Florida Association Newsletter - July 2012 |
| |
Greetings. What a great time to be a member of USATF! We have just competed the Olympic Trials that have showcased some new talent as well as that of some of our veterans! USATF-FL boasts an affiliation with some of our premier athletes such as Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gaye in addition to some new faces on the circuit. I would say that the U.S. Track & Field Olympic team is in good hands and should do well in London! Association elections will be held on August 25, 2012 at our USATF-FL Annual Meeting. We will be electing the following positions: President Executive Vice-President Vice-President North Vice-President South Budget Director (Treasurer) Secretary Athletes-At-Large I would like to encourage participation in the elections and urge anyone that has something to offer and is willing to work on a voluntary basis to become involved in any of these positions. I would suggest that all candidates have a proven history of service to the organization and the ability to contribute to our endeavor of growth and development in all disciplines. In the past 4 years, USATF-FL has developed re-defined itself due to the unprecedented efforts of the current Executive Committee. We have hosted 2 IAAF international events, 2 Race Walk Championships and qualifiers, Level 1 Coaching Certification, and are working on other viable developmental programs in LDR that include partnership with other major LDR and Road Racing events. Stay tuned for the next developmental phase that will be outlined at the 2012 USATF-FL Annual Meeting in Boca Raton on August 25th. I consider it a privilege to have served as your President for the last 4 years and am seeking re-election to continue our mission. I have successfully spearheaded the re-designing and management of our website, the on-line newsletter (bi-monthly), the hosting of the 2010 IAAF NACAC U-23 Championships (Miramar), the hosting of the 2011 IAAF Jr. Pan-American Championships (Miramar) amongst other accomplishments. Itr=t is my goal to work with the Executive Committee to host additional IAAF Championships and USATF national Championships within the next 4 years in addition to working with other members of the Committee to create our own USATF-FL Road Race and Open/Masters track series. This program will be announced at the Annual Meeting. We continue to improve our USATF Youth program in both cross country and track & field. I have started negotiations with two major corporate sponsors to provide funding for the continued development of our Open/Masters LDR and track & field programs which is an area where we need to provide incentives to encourage participation and the ability to compete with other non-Association events. I look forward to serving you for another term. In ending, I encourage you to continue to share in the growth and development of USATF-FL as we strive to increase our membership by offering viable programs in all disciplines. Yours In Track,

Re:Fine Designs Prohibition From Use Of Any USATF Owned Or Licensed Marks During 2012
Please be advised that Fine Designs, Inc. has been prohibited from using, in any way, any of the USATF owned and/or licensed marks, or any other marks that are similar enough to those of USATF to cause confusion. This prohibition includes all service marks, logos, designs, or trademarks which contain or include any of the USATF owned or licensed marks. Accordingly, associations who use Fine Designs will need to secure alternate vendors to address their event merchandising needs for the calendar year 2012 unless expressly notified otherwise by USATF in writing.
If, for some reason, your association is somehow unable to secure an alternate vendor for a particular association event, you may submit a waiver request to the national office for the limited authorization to use Fine Designs for that particular event. The national office will review each waiver request on a case by case basis and send a response back to you within thirty (30) days of submission. These waivers shall not be granted for any regional and/or national championship events. All waivers need to be submitted to the national office no later than sixty (60) days before the scheduled event in order to be considered (if your event is scheduled prior to April 7 the waiver form should be submitted no later than February 10.)
Please note, waivers will only be granted in those extreme cases where the association is able to demonstrate that there are no other vendors available who are capable of providing a reasonably competitive bid for the association's merchandising needs.
Thanks in advance for your attention and cooperation in this delicate matter.

USATF FLORIDA SANCTION INFORMATION |
| |
The Florida Association wishes to thank you for your continued support in sanctioning your events through USATF in 2011.
What is a "sanction"?
A USATF sanction is an official designation issued by USATF, through a local Association, which approves and licenses the holding of a competitive track & field, long distance running or race walking event in the United States. The sanction is also a contract, which evidences the event's commitment to follow national and international rules and regulations of the sport and to provide a safe environment for the participants and spectators. Once the event has satisfied the sanction requirements, the event's application for sanction is approved.
Benefits of sanctioning your event:
· Increased Prestige - For many events, the USATF sanction improves the event's public perception. A sanction tells athletes that an event is being run according to applicable competition rules. Sanctioned events have the ability to use the USATF event designation logo to promote the fact that the governing body has sanctioned the event.
· Liability Insurance - Most governmental entities including cities, counties, state highway departments, parks and community centers require general liability insurance for all events. The cost of a sanction is very inexpensive compared to the prices of most event insurance policies. It is important to know that events that are already insured may choose to waive the insurance coverage and pay a lower sanction fee.
· Sport Accident Insurance for Athletes - Any athlete who is a USATF member and is injured while participating in a sanctioned event will be eligible for secondary medical insurance coverage for the injury. This insurance not only provides valuable coverage to USATF members, but it serves as a valuable deterrent to lawsuits.
· Volunteer Event Medical Coverage (optional) - This add-on insurance coverage is available to USATF sanctioned events to provide medical liability coverage for volunteer physicians and all other volunteer healthcare providers providing support to participants, volunteers and spectators during sanctioned events.
· Calendar Promotion - Sanctioned events will be included in the USATF online calendar and be highlighted to distinguish them from non-sanctioned events.
· Records - In general, a sanction is required for a record to be set. There are some exceptions to this rule, however.
· Special Offers and Discounts - view offers & discounts available to sanctioned events
· Resolving Disputes - If requested, USATF will act as an arbiter in disputes between athletes and sanctioned events. Other - Each Association may provide additional benefits to its sanctioned events. Please contact your local Association for more details.

USATF FLORIDA OFFICIALS INFORMATION |
| |
We are ending the 2008-2012 Olympiad so all USATF officials will have to re-certify in the fall. The new rules reviews are scheduled to be released in October with re-certifying starting in November when the 2013 USATF membership numbers are assigned. Besides passing the appropriate level Rules Review, Officials will have to be members of USATF Florida through 2016, the next Olympiad, plus submit a Track and Field resume, a database form and have an updated picture for their ID cards. Complete details will be out in the fall.
One of the major new items for the new Olympiad is the addition of a fourth level of official's certification, the Apprentice or beginning first level. The levels will be Apprentice, Association, National and Masters.
At the annual meeting of USATF Florida in August, a motion will be made to change the length of time an official needs to work at the Association level before advancing to the National level - from the more restrictive Florida Association 3 year requirement to the National minimum of 2 years. The rationale is that it would take a new official 4 years (2 at the apprentice level plus 2 at the Association level) from when they first become certified to advance to the National level under the motion instead of 5 years if the Association's 3 year requirement is maintained. Of course all other requirements would stay the same.
Remember, in the Officials Committee, all currently certified USATF Florida officials who are registered at the meeting have a vote in the committee meeting, unlike other committees in which only club delegates can vote. I hope to see a large turnout at the meeting.
