Books We Recommend

So many new books, so little time! Jump right into the good ones with our recommendations:

Waiting for Sunrise Waiting for Sunrise
by William Boyd

In his newly released Waiting for Sunrise, William Boyd returns to some familiar ground in World War I Europe for a psychosexual spy thriller. Lysander Rief is a young stage actor who travels to Vienna for psychoanalysis by a Freud contemporary and ends up pressed into an Allied undercover military assignment. Rief's particular medical treatment and acting background make him a less-than-trustworthy narrator of events as he attempts to uncover a traitor spy. One of England's best contemporary novelists, William Boyd has just been contracted by the Ian Fleming estate to write a new James Bond novel.
A Land More Kind Than Home A Land More Kind Than Home
by Wiley Cash

This is an absolutely stunning debut novel that is told from the viewpoints of three equally engaging characters - although Jess is my favorite. Jess is an adventurous, curious 11-year-old with an older brother nicknamed "Stump", who is mute and always by Jess's side. The book revolves around a catastrophic event that is told alternately by Jess; Adelaide (an older member of the church and the town midwife); and Clem, the town sheriff. You are in the hands of a master storyteller in Wiley Cash, and it will resonate with you long after you reach the last page.

Calico Joe Calico Joe
by John Grisham
Feeling discouraged about your Red Sox? Enter the world of Calico Joe, a hot hitting rookie for the Chicago Cubs. His poignant story - intertwined with that of an unlikeable veteran - will keep you spell-bound until the end.

Heft Heft
by Liz Moore

I really loved this novel about a sad, dignified former professor turned shut-in, a 17-year-old kid, and the boy's troubled mother, who connects these two rather adrift people.  The voices of the characters are so real and the mood is bittersweet and moving.

Dog of the Week

  • Hannah

HannahI first met Hannah relaxing with her owner in front of Starbucks. Of course, I had to stop and say hello. After her coffee break, she came in to the bookstore to visit Rebecca. Hannah is very hard to photograph - we had a lot of action shots! I think we finally captured her sweet little face, though. Thank you for coming in, Hannah!
