Come out this Friday, April 13th at 4pm for a little sweetness and a whole lot of fun with dynamic mother-daughter writing team duo Sheryl and Carrie Berk as they read from the first book in their new series for kids, The Cupcake Club: Peace, Love, and Cupcakes. Sheryl is the bestselling co-author of Soul Surfer and Carrie is the nine-year-old cupcake aficionado behind the blog Carrie's Cupcake Critique: Reviewing Cupcakes Coast to Coast. Come hear the authors read from their book, get a book signed, enjoy some treats from Wellesley's own 5 Bites Cupcakes, and learn the best way to frost a cupcake from Carrie herself! Please RSVP to help us plan by calling the store at 781.431.1160, emailing kidevents@wellesleybooks.com, or RSVP on Facebook!
SAVE THE DATE - an evening with Judy Collins on May 9th! In honor of National Children's Book Week, Judy Collins will be talking about When You Wish Upon a Star and Over the Rainbow, her picture book and CD sets that are gorgeously illustrated by Eric Puybaret. She will be reading from and signing her books, sharing stories, and may even sing a few verses in what promises to be a magical evening!
Wellesley Books was featured in a Boston Globe article, "10.5 ways Local Bookstores Beat Amazon". Reason #11: we give treats to your dogs! This year we are celebrating two Centennials of note - the first game was played at Fenway Park 100 years ago April 20th, and the unsinkable Titanic sunk on April 15th, 1912. Of course there are many books commemorating these events and we have them on display at the front of the store.
Also, we have a special author storytime on Saturday the 21st at 10am - Jerry Palotta and illustrator John Dykes will read from and sign their new book F is for Fenway. We love our Red Sox! |

14 Minutes by Alberto Salazar
In the early 80's Salazar, who grew up in Wayland, was the best marathoner in the world and appeared to be on his way to becoming the greatest marathoner of all time before injury and illness cut his career short. Salazar has never been afraid to say what he believes and this makes for an informative read.

The Cove by Ron Rash
Whose body did the government man find in the well? We find out in this beautifully written story told by Laurel, a young woman living in a dark cove in South Carolina with her brother, their family scorned by the town because of superstitions during WWI. The author's poetic language appeals so much to me as in "dewdrops on a spider's web held whole rainbows inside them."

Elegy for Eddie by Jacqueline Winspear
In this latest Maisie Dobbs novel, Maisie is asked by a delegation from her childhood neighborhood to find out how a young man died in a paper factory. In her personal life, Maisie is struggling with her new-found wealth as well as her relationship with James, her upperclass fiancé. Maisie feels like an old friend by now! If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, you will love this series that is a favorite of our booksellers.

The Book of Jonas by Stephen Dau
This is a beautifully written debut novel about a 15 year old boy who has left his village in an unnamed war-torn Middle Eastern country and is brought to America to live with a family in Pennsylvania. Though he is determined to make his life better, he is bewildered by this new country with its wealth and bigotry. In therapy, as he recalls the American soldier who cared for him, he shows how war has not only affected his life, but all those around him.

Pete and Gabby: The Bears Go to Town by Kay Winters
Great for early readers or as a family read aloud, this is a charming story of two bears who decide to head into town and check out the sights. See what mischief they get into and how a ranger saves the day.
The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielson
With elements reminiscent of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper and Gloria Whelan's Listening for Lions, this action packed story is the first of a new trilogy. Conner, a nobleman of the court, has gathered up four orphans and plans to train them so that they may claim to be the heir to the throne of Carthya. Are Conner's intentions good or self-serving? A thrilling page turning read!
Chomp by Carl Hiaasen Chomp has humor, a Florida setting and plenty of animals. Wahoo Cray's father has been out of work since a frozen iguana fell from a tree and hit him on the head. When the opportunity arises to supply animals for the reality T.V. show Expedition Survival!, how can he say no? Although hilarity abounds, aspects of the plot have a more serious tone. Fans of Hiassen will enjoy!
Dreamsleeves by Colleen Murtagh Paratore Instead of enjoying the summer before 8th grade spending time with friends, Aislinn is stuck with the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings. She also has a Dad whose drinking problem is getting worse. The best thing about Aislinn though is that she knows how to dream; she knows what she wants. She decides to put her dreams on her sleeve for all to see and for all to help her to achieve. A touching story full of inspiration and hope.

We have a famous canine for Dog of the Week this week! Author and illustrator extraordinaire Tad Hills was in this past Saturday for a special storytime with his new Duck & Goose board book, Duck & Goose: Here Comes the Easter Bunny!. Tad brought in his mom and his dog, Rocket. He is the inspiration for his picture book, How Rocket Learned to Read.
Rocket is one of the most charming and well-behaved dogs we have ever had in the store. He was snuggled under the table where Tad was signing books, and was happy to welcome pats from little ones who noticed him there.
Thank you for bringing Rocket in with you, Tad!
