Didi EmmonsWe have had a sweet taste of spring this March - inspiration to start your garden. We have an even sweeter event on  April 5th at 7pm with talented chef Didi Emmons, who will inspire you to cook from your garden.
Didi's new book, Wild Flavors: One Chef's Transformative Year Cooking on Eva's Farm, is about her experience cooking from Eva Sommaripa's bucolic, slightly chaotic 2-acre organic farm. Didi will bring an intriguing selection of  locally grown plants to taste, and Wellesley Books booksellers will prepare delicious samples of foods from her book's recipes, including rhubarb scones, basil lemonade, parsnip tea cake and more! Our new neighbor, Gustare Oils & Vinegars, will provide unique oils and vinegars to sample as well! This is a ticketed event so please visit our website for all the important details.

Hex Hall Fans of YA fiction won't want to miss this event! Hex Hall author Rachel Hawkins will be here at 4pm on Thursday, March 29th.  Hailed as "impossible to put down," the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. This third volume will leave readers enchanted with a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor. Don't miss this opportunity to meet an up-and-coming writer!

Judy Collins SAVE THE DATE - an evening with Judy Collins on May 9th! In honor of National Children's Book Week, Judy Collins will be talking about When You Wish Upon a Star and Over the Rainbow, her picture book and CD sets that are gorgeously illustrated by Eric Puybaret. She will be reading from and signing her books, sharing stories, and may even sing a few verses in what promises to be a magical evening!

Books We Recommend

So many new books, so little time! Jump right into the good ones with our recommendations:

Wild Wild
by Cheryl Strayed

This is not your typical, clichéd story of personal redemption. Strayed tells the funny, painful story of her 1000+ mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, woven in with the brutally honest personal histories that culminated in this ill-prepared trek. Exquisitely written, this is a book about breaking your own heart so you can put it back together. I finished this in one day!
Glaciers Glaciers
by Alexis Smith
The story follows one day in the life of a young woman  reflecting on her childhood. The entire read was delicious and I felt a mounting excitement as I neared an ending that proved to be perfection.

Carry the One Carry the One
by Carol Anshaw

The novel begins at a wedding in the country with friends and family. The happy day ends with a horrific accident. Carry the One is the story of this group of friends, including a pair of siblings, and how they cope with the tragedy that indelibly links them. As one character says, "When you add us up, you always have to carry the one." I was completely taken in by this story and read it almost in one sitting!
Bringing Up Bébé Bringing Up Bébé
by Pamela Druckerman

I picked up Bringing Up Bébé skeptically, but to my surprise, I found myself really enjoying the book. Its construction around personal anecdotes prevents it from coming off as smug, and Druckerman is appealingly self-deprecating. By the end of the book, I was convinced that Druckerman knows what she's talking about, and that a parent could learn a great deal from her book. It was a delightful read and certainly didn't come off as supercilious or anti-American, as I had feared. My only major complaint is that the yogurt cake  ended up requiring a much longer baking time than specified!

Penny and Her Song by Kevin Henkes
In this new early reader, author and illustrator Kevin Henkes introduces us to his newest mouse character, "Penny".  Lorna is a big fan and raves, "Young Penny has a song of her own and wants to sing it for all to hear, but the babies are sleeping.  What is she to do?  Why, sing of course!  Yet another reason to love Henkes!"

Ruby Redfort Look Into My Eyes by Lauren Child
Move over Nancy Drew, Harriet the Spy, and Encyclopedia Brown and make room for Ruby Redfort, a super smart, code cracking, t-shirt wearing detective. The secret agency known as Spectrum has enlisted her help unraveling a mystery involving a shipment of gold bullion, the Jade Buddha and a crew of interestingly named villains. Full of action, gadgets and humor, this proves to be a fun read!

Wonder by R.J. Palacio
This is one of those books that will tug on your heart and make you think differently about the world.  Margaret loves this story about a boy facing huge challenges as he begins his first year going to a mainstream school.  She notes, "Filled with amazing characters, Auggie will make you laugh and cry and want to jump up and down."

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
Assassins in training, walled cities, poisons and weapons of torture, conspiracies, action, adventure and romance - this is the type of book that will keep you up until the wee hours of the morning  reading to the very satisfying end.  Margaret describes it: "Ismae is the daughter of Death.  Escaping from a brutal marriage, she is trained to be an assassin in service to the young duchess.  In a court full of intrigue and betrayal, whom can she trust?" Perfect for fans of The Hunger Games

  • April flowers and showers

Since our daffodils survived the cold this week, they have earned yet another photo in the newsletter! New in the store are these colorful, fun rain boots that are perfect for April showers. Some sock-bunnies hitched a ride to enjoy the sun.

The rain boots also have matching lap-desks and umbrellas in coordinating colors and patterns. Not sure how you could use them all at once, but they will definitely make you smile!

The sweet button-eyed sock animals come in bold stripey colors that are a fun alternative to pastels in your Easter baskets.

If you have been in shopping for cards lately, you know that we have the best cards around. Fun, sweet, artistic and LOTS of choices for Easter and Passover. Come on in and take a look!
