What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank by Nathan Englander
There are not enough words of praise for this brilliant collection of stories revolving around Jewish or Israeli themes. I gasped at some point in each one - from an unexpected event, from the grace and depth of the characters, from the sheer beauty of this writing. Not to be missed!

Home Front by Kristin Hannah
Kristin Hannah tackles the tough issues that surround a family when the Mom, a National Guard member, is sent to Iraq. It begins with a marriage in trouble, and I have to say I didn't feel much empathy for either partner. The novel got very interesting when the wife was called up for a tour of duty in Iraq. The details of the deployment and what each family member goes through were fascinating. This is when the book finally captured me. I felt it was very realistic and found it quite moving. |

The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood really takes you for a ride with this book, but in a good way. The lives of three women are revealed through their interactions with a mysterious fourth woman who acts as a transformative force. I love the structure of this novel, with all of its layers and echoes. Why didn't I read this sooner?!

The House I Loved by Tatiana de Rosnay
This family story is set in 1860's Paris during the reign of Napoleon the 3rd, in the same style de Rosnay used to lay bare the secrets of the Holocaust in Sarah's Key. The heroine fights against the destruction of her home even as things around her change every day. She escapes into the past by writing letters to her deceased husband using remembering to come to terms with a secret.

Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood
The year is 1964 and the Mississippi town where Glory lives is debating whether or not to keep the segregated pool open. Since she celebrates her 4th of July birthday at the pool every year, soon to be 12 year old Glory wants to find out why the pool might have to close. The answers she gets do not always make sense, and she is trying to understand what is really happening. A sweet story that introduces young readers to the civil rights movement. The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis
This beautifully written middle grade novel is rich in memorable characters and vivid historical detail. Set in Indiana during the Great Depression, it tells the story of Deza Malone, a smart, resilient girl in a family that is wonderfully warm despite being poor. When her father is injured in a mysterious accident and must head off to Michigan to look for work, the family hits harder times. Deza, her brother and her mother are evicted from their apartment and jump the train to go find their father. What happens along the way changes all of their lives.
New adventures for some of out favorite characters...
