The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson
The Orphan Master's Son is an adventure thriller, a coming of age story, and an almost surreal, Alice-in-Wonderland, meander through modern day North Korea. However, unlike the drab backdrop observable in current news footage - with the masses of citizens dressed in the same clothes, shoes, hairstyles, and eye glasses - the characters and landscape are rendered in vivid texture and details. The moments of revelation and poignancy throughout this beautifully written literary novel are too numerous to mention and would risk ruining the impact of individual discovery.

The Invisible Ones by Stef Penney
Small-time private investigator Ray Lovell veers between paralysis and delirium in a hospital bed. But before the accident that landed him there, he'd been hired to find Rose Janko, the wife of a charismatic son of a traveling Gypsy family, who went missing seven years earlier. Half Romany himself, Ray is well aware that he's been chosen more for his blood than his investigative skills. The mystery is as intriguing as the rare inside look into the Gypsy culture.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Can a book about kids with cancer be funny? If the author is John Green, then the answer is yes... and heart-wrenching, beautiful, witty, spontaneous, tragic, and messy. The Fault in Our Stars is full of characters so rich and real that you want them to be your best friends. They're dealing with cancer, yes, but also what it means to be a teenager, to be young, to be in love, and to have dreams, even if you know they are likely to be cut short.

A Dog is a Dog by Stephen Shaskan
Big bold illustrations and a great rhythmic text hold the attention of readers as they enjoy this guessing game of a story. Sure to induce more than a few giggles.
Carl fans and dog lovers will enjoy this story about a day at the Dog Show. A great dog glossary at the end encourages young eyes to search the illustrations for various dog breeds.
Two pigs, a bear and a moose decide to live together. They call Beaver Builders to build them a house - payment for this job, of course, is in peanut butter sandwiches! Sweet woodland characters, a lovely story and wonderful illustrations, this book has it all.
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate Ivan, a gorilla, has spent most of his life with humans and the other animals at the mall. His memory of life before humans and cages is hazy. That is, until a terrified young elephant joins him and he starts to remember the importance of family and belonging. A wonderful story that is full of heart!

I walked up the stairs today, looking for a dog of the week and look who I found -- Yoffie! He looked like he was waiting for me. When his owner told him he could have another treat if he posed for the picture, he went right around the register and waited patiently. Good boy, Yoffie!
