December 14, 2011

Happy New Year everyone! First and foremost, we would like to thank you, our wonderful customers, for all of your support this holiday season.  We were thrilled to see many familiar faces, as well as some we only get to see during the holidays. The holiday hustle and bustle created a great feeling in the store.

It is a time to reflect on what we are grateful for, and we are most grateful to be an integral part of this community. So thank you for supporting your local independent bookstore and keeping us a vital part of Wellesley Square.

For those of you who were shopping on either of the consecutive Tuesdays (December 20th and 27th) when we lost our computers, our sincere thanks for your patience and good humor! It's not often we get to go back to the 80's way of writing sales on a sales slip, and using the ka-chunk credit card machine.

Organize Your Mind, Organize Your Life Our event this Saturday, January, 7th at 4pm with Paul Hammerness and Margaret Moore has SOLD OUT. However, we would love for you to join us afterwards (around 5 pm) at the book-signing portion of the event to meet & chat with Margaret and Paul, and get a personalized copy of their book. If you cannot make it to the store and would like to have a book signed and personalized, please call the store and we will be happy to make that possible.

John Green Tour - SOLD OUT If you have already purchased tickets for the sold-out John Green event, please note that the venue has changed to the Wellesley Middle School. For more information, including parking, please check the event page on our website.  This event is sold out and no additional seats are available.

Why We Broke Up On  Saturday, January 21st at 4pm we welcome the wildly popular author Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) and award-winning illustrator Maira Kalman (brilliant cover artist for the New Yorker, designer for Kate Spade, and so much more). They are coming to the bookstore to talk about their unique new novel for young adults, Why We Broke Up.

Books We Recommend

It's a New Year and that means new books! You know we won't steer you wrong. Here's a sample of what we are recommending:

  • Betty recommends
Sister Sister
by Rosamund Lipton

I was in by sentence one and didn't let go until the last word. This suspenseful ode to sisters is a terror perfectly done. At times chilling and at times tender, Sister is a book you will not forget. A perfect read for January.

  • Kym recommends
The Leopard The Leopard
by Jo Nesbø

This was my first introduction to the Harry Hole series and I am now hooked! If you are a fan of Scandinavian crime fiction, you won't want to miss reading Jo Nesbø. Now I am ready to go back and start the series at the beginning! It's a brilliant roller-coaster ride filled with black humor, lots of action and a heavy dose of whiskey.

  • Melinda recommends

River of Smoke River of Smoke
by Amitav Ghosh

This new novel takes place in China and closely follows the characters and events in Sea of Poppies. The how and why of 19th century China vs. outsiders is the focus in this second volume in the trilogy. What will happen next?

  • Pete recommends

My Green Manifesto My Green Manifesto
by David Gessner
The humorous tale of Thoreau disciple David Gessner and his journey down the Charles. You don't need to travel to the national parks, the beauty of nature can be found in the most unexpected of places.

New in Paperback

Bossypants Poser: My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses   The Social Animal Stories I Only Tell My Friends   Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

  Bossypants by Tina Fey
 Poser by Claire Dederer
The Social Animal by David Brooks
Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua

In the Kids Section

  • Favorite New Releases

I Don't Want to be a Pea! by Ann Bonwill
A charming story about the give and take of friendship.  Hugo Hippo and Bella Bird are going to the Hippo-Bird (or is it Bird-Hippo) Fairy-Tale Fancy Dress Party together but they can't decide who will be the princess and who will be the pea or who will be the mermaid and who will be the rock or...they just can't agree.  The humorous back and forth will induce giggles and the colorful illustrations will delight young readers.

Dumpling Days by Grace Lin
For fans of Grace Lin's The Year of the Dog and The Year of the Rat, Pacy is back with a new adventure.  Her family is going to Taiwan for a whole month.  Pacy is not thrilled by the news but gets to Taiwan and is exposed to many new sights, sounds, art and food. As Pacy get to learn more about her Taiwanese background, we the readers also get to learn more about Chinese culture.

The first of a gripping four book series that involves a Prince, a plague, cyborgs, androids and a Lunar Society eager to go to war with Earth.  Great characters you will root for plus a compelling story line make this a read that is hard to put down.  We can't wait until 2013 for the continuation!

In the Gift Aisle

  • Annual Holiday Sale

Holiday saleBefore we make room for Valentine's Day (!) we still have lots of cool, unique gifts for 50% off the regular price - like Christmas and Chanukah boxed holiday cards, chilly and adorable stuffed penguins, Christmas stockings, Nutcracker magnetic sets, games, and even a couple of monkey hats. Come on in and take a look because once it's gone...it's gone! Happy New Year!

Down in the Used Book Cellar

  • New bookshelves!

Children's section in ubcDuring the middle of the holiday madness, we received a windfall - lots of new fixtures for the Used Book Cellar! December is not the most convenient of times for moving bookcases around, but look at how beautifully the picture books are now displayed! We will have our first buybacks of the year on Sunday, January 8th from 1pm - 5pm. So come on in and take a look and the new arrivals, both books and bookshelves!

Dog of the Week

  • Tucker

TuckerThe first time I saw Tucker, he was a small, fluffy white puppy about 4 months old and was one of the first dogs featured in our newsletter. He is now 4 years old! He braved the chilly temperatures this evening - was in fact the only dog seen in the store today - to come have his picture taken and enjoy some treats. Lorna recently uploaded all of our Dog of the Week photos from the newsletters to an album on our Facebook page, so we were able to show his human buddies how small and cute he was in his puppy picture. Now we will have little Tucker and grown up Tucker in our album! Thanks for coming back in tonight, buddy!
