Join us for a WICKED good time with Gregory Maguire TONIGHT, Wednesday, November 2nd at 7pm at the Needham Public Library. We will celebrate the publication of Out of Oz: The Final Volume in the Wicked Years, the stunning conclusion to the smash New York Times bestselling Wicked Years series. To open the event, we will hear a spectacular rendition of several songs from WICKED, the musical, thanks to the talented performers of the Wheelock Family Theatre, followed by a presentation and book-signing by Gregory. Books will be available for purchase at the Needham Library.
On Saturday, November 5th, award-winning local author, Sara Hoagland Hunter, and illustrator, Julia Miner, will be coming to Wellesley Books to launch their newest book, The Lighthouse Santa -- destined to be a Christmas classic. They'll be reading their Christmas tale based on the actual flights of Edward Rowe Snow, who for more than 40 years dropped Christmas presents to the children living in New England's lighthouses. Join in the holiday fun and pick up a jointly signed picture book for family and friends -- an heirloom holiday gift you'll return to year after year! Cookies will be served!
The finalists for the National Book Award were just announced, and you can find the complete list HERE. The winners will be decided on Wednesday, November 16th. Stay tuned!
Turn Out the Lights is a farewell to the Wellesley High School building and a celebration of over 70 years of educating Wellesley's students. There will be seminars, a gala concert of music and drama starring current and former students, a football game welcoming back WHS alumni/ae, dancing, food, visits with retired faculty members, and a giant yard sale of old WHS memorabilia, like banners, locker fronts and old uniforms.
Saturday, November 26th, American Express is holding its 2nd annual Small Business Saturday®. You can get a $25 statement credit if you spent at least that much at a small business that day - including Wellesley Books - so register your card today on their website.

"The book is second only to the wheel as the best piece of technology human beings have ever invented. A book symbolises the whole intellectual history of mankind; it's the greatest weapon ever devised in the war against stupidity." ~Author Philip Pullman

- Thanksgiving themed books...
Here are some Thanksgiving reads that are great for the whole family....
Have you ever wondered how the tradition of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade began? Wonder no more as Balloons Over Broadway tells the story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer whose creativity helped to shape this Thanksgiving Day event. A wonderful story of one man's innovative spirit that is enhanced by Melissa Sweet's amazing artwork. And on Saturday, November 12th at 10:30am, we will have a special storytime and crafts featuring Balloons Over Broadway!
Take Lydia Maria Child's classic song and pair it with Matt Tavares' evocative illustrations and you have a great book to share with every member of the family. As a bonus, the note about the author at the end of the book gives a little history. You will have a hard time not breaking into song!

Now that the pumpkins are gone, it's time to move on to pumpkin pie. I can't quite believe it, but it's true. Alexa just put up a display of must-have gifts for Thanksgiving. Cute Thanksgiving candles, pop-up turkey timers that are shaped like a turkey, napkins, and the OCD cutting board, complete with measurement grid. I will be sending my vegetarian sister an inflatable turkey for the table! Gobble, gobble!

Lorna, our book buyer, has taken all of our past Dogs of the Week and put them together in an album on Facebook. It is really quite impressive! I can't quite believe we have featured more than 75 dogs in our newsletter. Pictured to the left is Tucker, doing his best to hide from our scary Halloween trickster. I have to admit, he makes me jump whenever he lets out that creepy laugh! Tucker has also been known to make me jump when he lets loose with that hound-dog bay of his.
