October 19, 2011

It's beginning to feel a lot like Fall, which means there are lots of great books being released - and you know we won't steer you wrong. If you need a good recommendation, just let us know. Anytime. If we are not here in the store, you can find our recommendations HERE

Congratulations to Julian Barnes for winning the 2011 Man Booker Prize  for his novel, A Sense of an Ending!

JWhere You Left Meoin Jennifer Gardner Trulson on Thursday, October 20th at 7pm, here at the store, for a deeply moving reading from her memoir, Where You Left Me, about her life (and resiliency) after she lost her husband in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.   Bluntly honest, elegantly written, this story of grief and love thereafter is a triumph.

The Dahl Family

What are the benefits of shopping in a local, independent bookstore? We care about putting just the right book in your hands. We read the books so you won't be disappointed. We can help you find that book with the red cover by a doctor that you heard about on NPR. Well, most of the time we can - we will certainly try!  And best of all, we love to support our community. We do this by bringing authors to your local schools and libraries, having in-store book-fairs to fundraise for your school, and by offering online affiliate programs for local organizations. In return, we appreciate your support. When you find a book here, and buy it here, it keeps US here! And everyone is happy! Happy reading.

Books We Recommend

There are many new books coming out this season -- we will steer you towards the ones you won't want to miss. Here are some new titles we are recommending:

  • Betty recommends

Drama: An Actor's Education Drama: An Actor's Education
by
John Lithgow

Here is the inside story from the actor, master entertainer, and storyteller John Lithgow. Written as a tribute to his actor father, Arthur Lithgow, John details his many downs and ups before he got his break onstage at Harvard University. In and out of Hollywood and the London stage, John relives his many associations with Hollywood. Whatever your interest in acting, Drama should be on your list. A beautiful and fascinating autobiography.

The Art of Fielding The Art of Fielding
by
Chad Harbach

The Art of Fielding covers all the bases - small college baseball, Melville, and many memorable characters. The best baseball-related fiction since Brothers K. You don't need to be a baseball fan to appreciate this book.

  • Kym recommends
Lady of the Rivers Lady of the Rivers
by Philippa Gregory

I was riveted from the beginning of this amazing novel, when Jaquetta, a powerful, passionate woman born in tumultuous times, is introduced to Joan of Arc. From Jaquetta's marriage at a young age to a much older duke, and how she negotiates their relationship and her place in court, to her falling in love with a brave knight, this story will keep you transfixed. A riveting read for lovers of historical fiction and fans of Philippa Gregory. You won't be disappointed!

  • Allison recommends
The Inquisitor's Apprentice The Inquisitor's Apprentice
by Chris Moriarty

This book is an excellent and really fun read. With echoes of Holly Black's White Cat and Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policeman's Union, this book re-imagines a turn-of-the-century New York City where magic is both common and diverse. The main character is Sascha, a Russian Jewish immigrant who discovers that he has the ability to see magic and is recruited by the magic-crimes police division called the Inquisitors. This book is funny, tongue-in-cheek, inventive, and at times, even haunting. It seems to set itself up for sequels; I hope there will be several.

  • New releases that are bright, bold and even a little silly...

Happy Pig Day! by Mo Willems
The latest Elephant and Piggie adventure has just arrived! Piggie is excited to be celebrating his favorite day of the year - Happy Pig Day. What is an elephant (without a snout or hooves) to do? As always, the pair work things out and readers will giggle with joy!

The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories by Dr. Seuss
As the introduction notes, this is buried treasure! These seven rarely-seen stories appeared in magazines from 1948-1959. Charles D. Cohen, the world's foremost Seuss scholar researched and gathered them to create this new read aloud. Zany characters, big, bold artwork and rhyming text are just what you'd expect from Dr. Seuss.

Grin and Bear It by Leo Landry
Bear wants to be a stand up comic but he gets nervous in front of a crowd. Will he be able to get up on stage and perform? The silly bear jokes and the sweet woodland creatures make for a fun read!

Paul Thurlby's Alphabet by Paul Thurlby
An amazing new alphabet book that is perfect for those learning their letters (or those that just love great artwork)! The illustrations are fresh and vibrant. There has been a debate in the store about whether E for Embrace or R for Rabbit is the coolest. Come in and check it out. An added bonus is that the book jacket is also a poster!

Dog of the Week

  • Ares

AresThis adorable 5 month-old pug is named Ares, for the god of war. I think he could stop any war with those chocolate brown puppy eyes! Ares came in with his owner (human companion?) Lorna Hayward. This wonderful photo was taken by our book buyer, Lorna Ruby. We should all share some Lorna Doone cookies and it will be a trifecta!
