The Wellesley Free Library is excited to announce that its first Wellesley Reads Together program will take place from October 1 to November 13, 2011. Wellesley Reads Together is a town wide program in which all ages participate by reading and discussing the same books and participating in community events related to the books. Wellesley Books will be making a donation to the Wellesley Free Library for all sales of the two selected books.
Another event we're excited to be joining this year is the Boston Book Festival. We'll be all over the place on Saturday, Oct. 15th, selling books for the readings by Richard Russo and many more. Make sure you make it into the city that day for the biggest book party of the year! Visit the link above for the complete schedule of events. There is definitely something for everyone. Come find us and say hello!
On Thursday, October 6th at 7pm, join Peter Hartshorn at the Needham Public Library for an inspirational talk based on I Have Seen the Future: A Life of Lincoln Steffens, a biography of the famous "muckraking" journalist Lincoln Steffens. It is sure to be a night of great conversation.
Heroes of Olympus, Book 2: Neptune's Son by Rick Riordan has arrived! We have a limited number of surprise give-aways for those who come in to buy this hotly awaited sequel. What will happen to Percy Jackson? Rick Riordan sure knows how to entertain us, doesn't he?
Next week is chock full of events - five to be exact. We are proud to be partnering with our local libraries and offering you events at many fabulous venues:

"A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading." ~ William Styron
|
There are many new books coming out this season -- we will steer you towards the ones you won't want to miss. Here are some new titles we are recommending:
|
|
|
Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard
So who killed Garfield? The assassin or the doctors? Yes, she wrote that great book about Teddy Roosevelt (River of Doubt). This book is the perfect choice for the history lover in your family.

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
The Dovekeepers is a brilliant historical novel set in 70 C.E and is inspired by the true story of the 900 Jews who held out against the Roman army on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian, Josephus, two women and five children survived the siege. The Dovekeepers is the story of four extraordinary women, each brought to Masada by their own challenging circumstances. You will be entranced by these bold, resourceful, intriguing women. This is Alice Hoffman at her absolute best.

One D.O.A, One On the Way by Mary Robison
Robison falls somewhere between Lydia Davis and Amy Hempel but is funnier than either. In this post-Hurricane Katrina tale, she packs tons of funny/heartbreaking insights into her signature short, fragmented chapters.
|
|
Last Man in the Tower by Aravind Adiga
This is the story of the residents of Vishram Society's Tower A - an old apartment building in the heart of Mumbai. When a ruthless developer offers money for each of them to leave so he can build a new condo, one of them resists, insisting he maintain his sentimental attachments. The novel moves towards a story of greed and desperation, featuring a great cast of characters, India itself being one of them.

The Sniffles for Bear by Bonnie Becker
For those fans of our last year's holiday recommendation A Bedtime for Bear, the duo is back with a new adventure. This time, Bear is struck down with a terrible cold so mouse comes to his rescue. You will enjoy the back and forth of this lovable pair!
I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen
Bear's hat is gone, so he politely asks his fellow forest friends if they have seen it. Just as he is about to give up hope, his memory is jogged and he remembers that he saw someone wearing it. How will he get it back? The bear's facial expressions are priceless and the sparseness of the illustrations add to the tale's simplicity. A great read aloud!
Pie by Sarah Weeks
Alice's Aunt Polly is an award-winning pie baker. She suddenly dies and her pie crust recipe is left to her cat, Lardo. When Lardo goes missing, Alice and her friend Charlie must piece together what happened. You will have a hankering for pie after reading this sweet mystery as each chapter starts with an actual pie recipe!
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen", this dark tale tells the story of Hazel and Jack, best friends who have recently grown apart. When Hazel discovers that Jack has gone missing, she heads into the woods to find him. The descriptions of the the woods and its inhabitants is wonderfully written. Fans of classic tales will enjoy!

Meet Otis the turning Corgi - he is famous for turning his head when he sees a camera - I think Lorna did a fabulous job of capturing him! Otis is also a happy golfer. He lives near a golf course and has free reign to run wherever he pleases. Sounds like a pretty good life to me!
