September 21, 2011

We celebrated our one year anniversary as Wellesley Books with our new owners, Gillian and Bill Kohli on Tuesday, September 20th! Gillian brought in this cute and delicious cake. We would like to thank all of our customers for keeping Wellesley Books a strong and vital part of the community.

Guess How Much I Love You We have two amazing events today, Wednesday, September 21st. For the first time in ten years, Sam McBratney, beloved author of Guess How Much I Love You, will be doing a U.S. tour and Wellesley is his only Boston-area stop! Beautiful new padded board book and pop-up book editions of Guess How Much I Love You have just been released and Sam will be joining fans at  Wellesley Books at 4pm for an intimate reading, Q&A, and signing. This is a reading you won't want to miss!

Then at 7pm at the Wellesley Free Library, Stacy Schiff, acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Cleopatra: A Life, will be delivering a fascinating presentation. Her masterful, myth-busting biography of Cleopatra illuminates the life of the last of the Egyptian pharaohs.Come hear about it all from the author, captivating in her own right! A book-signing session will follow the presentation and Q&A.

YOU WILL BE MY FRIEND! On Thursday, September 22nd at 4pm, author/illustrator Peter Brown will be joining fans and young readers at the Wellesley Free Library for a hilarious presentation, drawing demo, and reading in honor of his new book You Will Be My Friend, once again starring the strong-willed Lucy!

Letters to Jackie We have a special tea and author event planned for Thursday, September 22nd at 7pm here at Wellesley Books. Enjoy tea, sweets and an illuminating reading of Letters to Jackie: Condolences from a Grieving Nation by historian Ellen Fitzpatrick.  Within seven weeks of her husband's death, Jacqueline Kennedy received more than 800,000 condolence letters. Professor Fitzpatrick selected approximately 250 of these letters in a remarkable human record that perfectly preserves the heart-wrenching grief and soul searching of the nation in a time of crisis. This is sure to be a poignant and memorable event.

Join us in a Mom's Day Out campaign to support our servicemen and -women. Come to our store on September 22nd with a donation of travel-size toiletries (e.g. soap, shampoo, toothpaste), or other items for Blue Star Mothers care packages, and we'll give you a Wellesley Books coupon good for 20% off one purchase, including books, cards, and gifts. Red Sox fans -- along with the general public -- are being asked to donate new, age-appropriate books for children under the age of 5. We have a list of books in the store and also online. More than 1,800 books are needed to support Reach Out and Read Programs at the Hanscom Air Force Base Clinic in Lexington, MA and Naval Health Clinic New England in Newport, RI.

Books We Recommend

There are many new books coming out this season -- we will steer you towards the ones you won't want to miss. Here are some new titles we are recommending:
  • Gillian recommends

The Night CircusThe Night Circus
by
Erin Morgenstern

"How did she ever think of that?" I kept asking myself, as I luxuriated in the author's extraordinary descriptions of an enchanted traveling circus, crafted entirely in black and white, and open only from dusk to dawn. Amid tarot card readers, contortionists and acrobatic kittens, rival magicians engage in a deadly competition, leaving circus goers and readers unsure whether they are witnessing magic or merely magic tricks.

The Map of TimeThe Map of Time
by
Félix J. Palma

While I had no preconceived notions of this book, I found it an utter delight! I can only describe it as a fairy tale for adults, with an unknown narrator introducing each section. Set in Victorian London, the book includes every genre - science fiction, time travel, romance, historical fiction and plenty of humor, all of which will keep you entranced for 609 pages. Fabulously written, I wish I could read it all over again.

  • Rebecca recommends
Widow: StoriesWidow: Stories
by Michelle Latiolais

The author's love of words makes these stories exceptionally powerful - read Pink (page 39) and you'll understand. Despite the difficult subject, this collection is a delight!

  • Margaret recommends
Daughter of Smoke and BoneDaughter of Smoke and Bone
by Laini Taylor

I was totally enthralled by this book, which begins with an art student in Prague who's trying to avoid an irritating boyfriend, and turns into an incredible story of love, magic, angels and devils. I am thrilled that Laini Taylor will be HERE at Wellesley Books on September 30 to talk about Daughter of Smoke and Bone.
Ages 15 and up.

Wonderstruck Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick - our booksellers are passing it around and loving it! Brian Selznick creates a marvelous story in words and illustrations. He weaves together the lives of Ben, from 1977 Minnesota and Rose, from 1927 New York. The characters come together at the American Museum of Natural History -- and for E. L Konigsburg fans, there are several nods From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Readers from 10 to 100 will enjoy this lovely sweet read!

In the Gift Corner
