What better way to spend a rainy day than to peruse our upcoming calendar of events and check out our bookseller recommendations? And as luck would have it, Random House is offering a select group of both adult and children's Google eBooks at reduced prices. You can find the complete list HERE and download them from our website. No need to brave the gloomy, wet weather in order to get a fabulous new read!
This Friday, September 9th at 4:00 pm, we welcome writer/cartoonist Lincoln Peirce, creator of the Big Nate comic strip. Lincoln will be at the Wellesley Free Library to talk about the third novel in his hilarious Big Nate book series! He'll be giving a drawing demo, explaining cartooning tools and vocabulary, and talking about how he puts together stories for his books!
On Saturday, September 10th at 2pm, join us in celebrating the debut picture book by one of our own! Jane Kohuth, children's bookseller extraordinaire will be giving an engaging reading of her picture book Estie the Mensch. Come read along with Jane, make some animal noises, learn some Yiddish, and find out what it takes to make a great story! Light refreshments will be served.
Next Wednesday, September 14th at 7pm, join mystery lovers (and dog lovers) for a book launch celebration with Spencer Quinn, author of The Dog Who Knew Too Much, the fourth book in the NY Times bestselling Chet & Bernie mystery series featuring canine narrator Chet and his human companion, Bernie! Be prepared to be charmed by Spencer while enjoying refreshments and contributions from two great cosponsors. Dog goodie bags will be served, courtesy of cosponsor Especially for Pets, Inc. And, representatives from cosponsor Buddy Dog Humane Society, Inc. will be present as well!
Then next Thursday, September 15th 7pm, join Kevin O'Connor and Wellesley photographer Michael Casey at a book launch party in the Wellesley Free Library, held to celebrate the publication of their new book, The Best Homes from THIS OLD HOUSE. Kevin O'Connor is host of the longest running home improvement show on TV, the Emmy® Award-winning PBS series This Old House. He is also host of PBS' Ask This Old House and This New House on the DIY Network! Come hear Kevin's and Michael's war-stories, unique insights and more!
Betty will be meeting with her book group next week, Tuesday, September 13th at noon - and we would like to showcase books that your book groups are reading, too. Shoot us an email with your latest selection as we would like to keep this an ongoing feature in our store. The shortlist for the Man Booker Prize for fiction was announced this week, and it includes two first-time novelists. The winner will be announced on October 18th - stay tuned! |

There are many new books coming out this season, and we will steer you towards the ones you won't want to miss. Here are some new titles we are recommending:
We the Animals by Justin Torres
Beautiful, brutal, lyrical, disturbing, powerful, heartbreaking - and more. This is the story of three brothers growing up in a mixed-up, crazy household that you will never forget.
The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen
Yes, this is another Scandinavian thriller - but with no snow and a lighter hand. You will be laughing one minute, and on the edge of your seat the next. This is the beginning of a series, thank goodness!

Shelter by Harlan Coban
Harlan Coben's first mystery for young adults is the story of 15 year-old Mickey Bolitar, who's trying to cope with the tragic death of his father and his mother's struggles with drug abuse. When his girlfriend suddenly disappears and he discovers that she isn't who he thinks she is, Mickey's search for answers leads him first to a rundown old house and a crazy old lady who seems to have some secret connection to his family, and then to an encounter with an underworld crime ring and a shattering revelation. Ages 12 and up.

We are taking a little departure this week to introduce you to one of our favorite literary dogs. Chet is the wise and lovable canine narrator of the Chet & Bernie Mystery Series, who works alongside Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator. Full of heart and occasionally prone to mischief, he is intensely loyal to Bernie, who, though distracted by issues that Chet has difficulty understanding - divorce, cash flow, and child custody - is enormously likeable himself, in his flawed, all-too-human way. There's genuine suspense and intrigue, combined with humor and deep insight into the bond between dog and man. From a dog's-eye perspective, crime has never been so much fun. Below is a book trailer for Chet and Bernie - enjoy! You can meet author Spencer Quinn on September 14th at 7pm here at Wellesley Books.
