Parent Teacher Home Visit Project Newsletter

The PTHVP is on the move across the nation!
November 2011
Greetings!

Many thanks to you and or your colleague who took time away from work and home to join us in Reno, Nevada this past October for our fifth national gathering!  Over 200 parents, teachers, administrators, school board and community members from eleven states came together to share our common efforts, expertise, challenges and opportunities.  Over the course of four days, we balanced the time together between the nuts and bolts of launching, expanding and sustaining local efforts as well as the need to formalize our national collaboration to better leverage funding and policy changes.

In this issue of our newsletter, you will hear from two of our conference participants- powerful advocates for parent/teacher home visits.  First, Paul Lumpkin, an amazing dad from Springfield, MA, shares his home visit story and reminds us of the importance of connecting with single fathers.  Then, Janel Possiel from Denver, offers a compelling testimony regarding the power of the home visiting for new teachers.  Both Paul and Janel remind us all why we do what we do:  because relationships really do matter in education reform.

Our collaboration is more important than ever as our model of home visits continues to gain traction nationally.  If you feel so moved, we'd be thrilled to have you make a donation to the national PTHVP expansion in honor of a parent or teacher this holiday season.  Simply click below and make a donation.  Any amount helps!

Thank you for all you do in your local communities, for your willingness to collaborate nationally, and for your vision and actions to continue to improve public education- for the sake of our children.

Executive Director

Parent Perspective...
Paul Lumpkin is a 28 year single father, who was reluctant to have his first home visit; but after his child's teacher came to his home, a connection was made and better results took place.

Teacher Talk...
The real magic of the home visit project is the love that results from checking our assumptions and fears at the door. Janel is a special educator from a school in Denver, Colorado. Home visits helped Janel with more than classroom management; they helped her grow both professionally and as a human being.
