November Fun

Thanksgiving table
in Bethesda and beyond

                                                        November 2011

Baby, it's cold outside - or if not, it soon will be. Because it's November, we're all about cocktails

by the fire, crisp afternoons outside and

homemade pies (and therefore, elastic-waist

pants).  So bundle up, settle in and see

what we've found for you this month.

If you're going over the river and through the woods,  you mustn't arrive empty handed. Well, the folks at Spring Mill Bread Company won't allow it either! They're fixing up some scrumptious dessert platters that will have all your relatives swooning.  Because they love Mary Murphy, they're offering YOU a deal they've never offered before: $5 off any party platter of $35 or more. Mention Mary Murphy or show this guide when ordering (expires 12/31/11).  If the platters aren't your thing, try a pie;  each one is handmade (literally, each apple is peeled by hand). It doesn't get more authentic than that!

Are you a foodie who goes nuts for cooking demos or dreams of Paula Deen? If so, you just can't miss the wowapalooza that is the Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show.  You'll find more than 300 exhibitors, celebrity chefs, workshops and enough ideas to thrill the guests at your Thanksgiving table. The show runs November 5 and 6, so get your tickets now and put it on your calendar.

Have you heard of the Kids Euro Festival?  It's touted as a celebration of European Arts and Culture for kids 2 - 12, and the lineup they've got planned sounds like it will wow you AND your kids. Think magicians, storytellers, an orchestra, dancers and puppeteers, all the while teaching a gentle cultural lesson. The festival runs for a month but closes on November 10.

Ice, ice baby....and we're not kidding!  We're talking two million pounds of hand-carved ice!  Beginning November 18 and continuing through the holiday season, you can visit the Gaylord National's always-popular Ice! Exhibit at the National Harbor. Remember the Grinch exhibit last year? This year, the talented team will feature Dream Work's Madagascar - Santa crashes his sled on the island, and all your old friends must figure out how to deliver the presents themselves to save Christmas.

If your family is a parade-loving bunch, you can't miss the annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade on Saturday, November 19.  You'll get marching bands, floats, and Thanksgiving surprises.  It promises to be a festive morning of old-fashioned fun!

'Tis the season of helping those who need it.  How about gathering your family and friends and participating in the annual Help the Homeless Walk on November 19?  Fannie Mae has raised more than $85 million dollars since the walk began in 1988, and all of that money goes to prevent and end homelessness in our community.

turkey runningQuick, lace up your running shoes before you belly up to the table! The 29th annual Turkey Chase in Bethesda begins at 8:30 am on Thanksgiving Day with a 10K race for mom and dad.  Older kids can compete in a two-mile race at 8:50 am, and the little ones can chase the turkey mascot while "racing" on the YMCA infield track. Even if they don't catch the turkey, they'll win a prize!

On Friday, November 25, wake up at the crack of dawn. Down some hot coffee, race out the door and hit the malls by 6 am for the best Black Friday shopping deals around!  Actually, you can get great deals any time of day on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and in this age of the Internet, you might be able to sip your coffee while still in your pj's and shop.  Either way, happy deal hunting!

If you didn't get enough spookiness in October, you can visit the Round House Theater's second run (after a sold-out run last year) of Happenstance Theater's Cabaret Macabre. It's inspired by Edward Gorey, Victorian nightmares, dangerous croquet and ill-fated twins; who can resist such titillating subjects?  Please note that this production might be a bit scary to those under 10 years old.

These sure aren't the puppets we used to see.  Visit The Puppet Co. during the month of November for a fabulous performance of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Children (pre-K to fourth grade) will delight in the adventures of the three goats going trip-trap-tromp over the bridge as they try to outsmart the resident troll. Starts November 4.

The advice contained in this

very opinionated Bethesda
