 Springtime Fun
in Bethesda

and beyond

 May/June 2011

There'd better be a SPRING in your step with

the gorgeous weather around the corner!

May and June are great months to get

outside and exercise, eat, play...and we

have tons of ideas for you to do just that!

mothers dayThis Mother's Day, plan something really special (even if you have to do it yourself!).  Visit the Virginia wine country, where your kids can run around outside and you can sample local wines (www.virginiawine.org).  Head down to Old Town, Alexandria and have brunch at Gadsby's Tavern, then take a free tour of historic Old Town.  Visit Brookside Gardens where you can walk among gorgeous flowering azaleas in breathtakingly manicured gardens.  Plan a trip now at www.brooksidegardens.org.

baklavahIn the mood to get stuffed on souvlaki?  Or do you go batty for baklava?  Then hit the Greek Festival at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on May 6 - 8.  You can enjoy authentic Greek food, music, dancing, vendors, and a flea market.  There are also tons of fun activities for kids.  Check out all of the delicious details at http://www.stgeorge.org/news/newsupcomingevents.

guppy gala

Get your Guppy on!

That would be the perennial favorite Guppy Gala at the National Zoo.  This year, they're only allowing FONZ members to purchase tickets, so if you're not a FONZ member (a great deal if you want to do it), just ask your friends to buy you tickets.  This family-friendly event on May 13 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm is a riot of fun for kids!  They have rock-climbing walls, obstacle courses, mazes, gymnasts, magicians and FOOD!  If you've never been, you're missing out, and we don't say that lightly.  Learn everything you need to know at

 nationalzoo.si.edu/ActivitiesAndEvents/Celebrations/Guppy/default.cfm.

crosby stills and nashThis one is just for the parents: remember Crosby, Stills and Nash?  If you head to Strathmore Hall on May 2 at 8:00 pm, you can hear the Crosby and Nash part of that trio live in concert.  Visit www.strathmore.org/eventstickets/calendar.

outdoor concertOn Thursday evenings, from May to July, Bethesda offers free outdoor concerts from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  The performances are in Veterans Park, which you might only know as the area where you could sit and eat your Ben & Jerry's ice cream (oh, you smiling cow, how we miss you!).  Check out the schedule & put these dates on your calendar. It's just amazing family fun (www.bethesda.org/bethesda/summer-concert-series).

wolftrapFor some tunes under the stars, you have to check out the calendar of events at Wolftrap.  They don't start the summer series until June, but you will not believe the lineup they've got planned!  Remember, Wolftrap is the ultra-cool venue where you pack picnic baskets and bring blankets and watch top-notch entertainment, whether it's concerts or shows.  Just in June, you could see The Indigo Girls, Bill Cosby, Gilbert & Sullivan, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Patti LaBelle, Elivis Costello  - the list goes on!  Take a look here: www.wolftrap.org/Find_Performances_and_Events.aspx?click=1&month=6&year=2011&t=Performance.

stilt walker

On Saturday, June 4 from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, bring anyone in the under-12 crowd to Imagination Bethesda.  This street festival at takes place at Woodmont Ave & Elm Street, and  offers live entertainment, hands-on creative activities, face painting, roving performers, balloon artists and more.  Info at www.bethesda.org/bethesda/imagination-bethesda.

big trainFriday, June 3 is opening night for a real local favorite: Big Train Baseball (www.bigtrain.org).  If you want to hear the crack of the bat, catch a pop fly from the stands, swat the flies away from your sticky, ice-cream-covered kids, probably run into your neighbors and watch some excellent minor league baseball, go to one of these games.  They're close, inexpensive, and likely one of the memories you'd just love for your kids to have.

strawberriesOne of the greatest ways to spend a late spring or summer day is picking your own fresh fruit.  One favorite spot is Butler's Orchard (www.butlersorchard.com), and luckily, late May brings strawberry season!  You'll also get blueberries, sweet peas and tart cherries in the next few months, so grab a basket and head up there.  And here's even more good news:  at Butler's, they don't weigh your children before and after to see what they've consumed, so your little berry munchers are safe!

white water raftingIf the local pool just won't cut it for your family this summer, here's a really great idea - go white water rafting!  Yes, you can do it close to home, and get all of the thrills you can handle!  Visit www.riverriders.com/RRMain.asp?Option=List&Activity=Rafting and learn how you can take a two-to-three hour trip on the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers near Harper's Ferry.  This adventure will make you a fun date, a super cool parent or just give you an afternoon to remember. Tubing trips are available for the less adventurous.

frog and toadIn case it's escaped you, we are enthusiastic supporters of Adventure Theater.  The proximity to Bethesda, the quality of the performances and the age-appropriate themes all leave us clamoring for tickets.  This May and June, you can see A Year with Frog and Toad, which is a story almost every preschooler knows.  Elementary-age kids will love this, too, as will any parents or grandparents.  These funny shows are gems.  Schedules are available and tickets can be purchased online at www.adventuretheatre.org.

fine artsWant to see some beautiful, soul-stirring art? On May 14-15, stroll around Norfolk Avenue for the Bethesda Fine Arts Festival.  It's the highest-ranking fine arts show in Maryland, and it's right in our back yard.  It's also in the middle of restaurant heaven, so give it a try! Visit

www.bethesda.org/bethesda/bethesda-fine-arts-festival.

The advice contained in this newsletter is the result of
three very opinionated
Bethesda moms getting
together over coffee.  We
don't get paid, these aren't
advertisements; these are the
same great ideas and tips we
share with our friends.  Enjoy!
