Looking for fun things to do this Fall?

Mary J. Murphy has some ideas!

Back away from the Halloween candy and hit the gym.  Seriously - get your Kit-Kat-stuffed self to the gym and beat the hordes of slugs that plan to show up January 1, brimming with optimism about their New Year's resolutions.  Find your favorite spin bike, figure out whether you like the front or back of the class, learn to use the controls on the treadmill...no pressure, no crowds, calm instructors.  Whether you need to reduce some posterior padding or blow off kid/husband/job/life-induced steam, area gyms offer many options to get your endorphins coursing.  Fitness First (www.fitnessfirstclubs.com), with zillions of locations right around here, is only $35 a month and offers traditional equipment as well as spin classes, body pump, yoga, pilates, even "yogalates" for those who can't decide!  The Bethesda YMCA (www.ymca.org) offers a fantastic indoor swimming pool along with the gym, and Washington Sport Club (www.mysportsclubs.com) was just voted "Best Gym" by Washington Post Express.  And the new Bethesda Equinox (www.equinox.com) is about as luxurious as gyms get...you will be so pampered you won't even know you're working out!

Local theaters offer some great entertainment this month.  Adventure Theater (www.adventuretheater.org), located in Glen Echo Park, is running The Happy Elf starting November 12 (with music and lyrics by Harry Connick, Jr.), and then launches Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on November 19.  For every family with elementary-aged kids, Imagination Stage will please with its offering Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells beginning November 24.  Yes, we know, but it really is very funny.  (www.imaginationstage.org)

If you're of the - ahem - "mature" demographic, you will be thrilled to hear that Strathmore (www.strathmore.org) is tossing two treats your way this month: first, folk legend Judy Collins performs on November 4.  On November 13, Kris Kristofferson (now who in the world can resist singing along with "Me and Bobby McGee?") plays a solo show.

Enjoy a crisp fall night at a high school football game.
The final varsity Walter Johnson game of the season is November 5 at 6:30 pm.  The JV team plays its last game November 4 at 5:30 pm. Both WJ teams, with home-field advantage, play Richard Montgomery.  Tickets are $5 per person.  Take the kids for family fun or have a cheap date with your mate while reminiscing about those high school days.(www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/wjhs/athletics/football/).
Cox Farms (www.coxfarms.com) asks, "What happens to pumpkins after Halloween?"  If you bring your moldy old jack-o-lantern to the farm on November 6 or 7, you'll find out!  Hurl, smash, drop and squish are some of the words used to describe "Pumpkin Madness," where you get out all your aggression with your past-their-prime pumpkins and the Squisher and the Smasher.  If you missed Cox Farms during October, or even if you didn't, this weekend event is definitely worth the trip.
bicycleGrab your kids, your bikes and your helmets and ride the Capital Crescent Trail down to Georgetown.  Weekend mornings are brutal -- dogs, bikes, roller blades and running shoes all compete for turf, but choose any afternoon and crunch through the leaves as you travel this paved railroad track.  It's peaceful and quiet and will make you feel fall in your soul.  Want to know a secret?  Parking in the Bethesda pool lot is free, usually empty, and sets you right by mile marker number four on the trail. www.cctrail.org/CCT_Maps.htm
Appreciate the outdoors and the arts and think about the Bethesda Art Walk (www.bethesda.org/bethesda/art-walk).  Held the second Friday of every month (that's November 12 if you don't have a calendar handy), this event features local galleries and studios that open their doors from 6 - 9 pm.  Browse, grab some sangria at Jaleo (or some ice cream at Häagen-Dazs if you're ignoring the workout suggestion) and take advantage of visiting multiple artists on one stroll.

Okay, so if you really want to ignore the exercising idea, send your kids off on an afternoon playdate, grab your spouse and hit the wine country...the Virginia wine country (www.virginiawineries.org).   If, for example, you wanted to buy a "passport" for $10 and tour four wineries, with souvenir wineglasses, tastings and munchies along the way, the Heart of Virginia Harvest Wine Trail is for you.  There are soup weekends, barrel tastings, and even a fudge-apalooza party...who knew?  The mountain scenery is breathtaking in the fall, and the people who work out there are always friendly and helpful.  Hey, wouldn't you be friendly and helpful if you got to drink wine all day long?

'Tis the season to start agonizing over gifts for the holidays!  There are many local holiday bazaars but the big mac daddy in this area is the Junior League of Washington's A Capital Collection of Holiday Shops (www.jlw.org).  This huge event brings together more than 60 merchants peddling unique gifts, and benefits literacy in DC, so you will feel quite philanthropic as you open your wallet.  This event takes place the weekend of November 19 at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel, located at Connecticut Avenue NW and Woodley Road.  You'll feel fantastic for having gotten a jump on your shopping, and the festive atmosphere never fails to spark a childlike excitement about the holidays.

Breathe Deep, DC  It's Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and November 7 brings a 5K (3.1 mile) walk on the National Mall.  This walk was started just last year by a Bethesda resident battling the disease, and proceeds fund a non-profit group dedicated to research and support for those afflicted.  For more information, visit www.lungevity.org/dcwalk.

turkey runningOn November 25 (yep, that's Thanksgiving Day), it is guaranteed you will be searching for a little fresh air.  Take the whole family out for the Y MCA's annual Turkey Chase (www.turkeychase.com).  Whether your little one wants to join the Tot Trot and chase a giant turkey mascot (which just sounds hilarious), your family wants to enjoy a two-mile fun run/walk or you want to conquer the 5K, it's a great morning of outdoor fun before you belly up to the bird.
