Greetings!
There has never been a more exciting time for the Cougars, with the move to our new Arena and the grand opening this weekend to the increase in the need of volunteers and staff. The Cougars are looking forward to an amazing new year in our new State-of-the-Art facility. (Amazing photos below). If you are not seeing images in this email, click on 'Display Images' at the top of this email in your email program because you will want to see these. We have also included in this addition, our recent press releases and up and coming events. It is with great sadness that the Cougars organization lost one of our long time volunteers, John Elinsky who is remembered by all for his many years selling 50/50 tickets at the Cougars games until his health disallowed him to continue. It is with wonder last night however, as Todd and I were at the Wellington Dukes game when our current 50/50 staff,Terry Elinsky (Johns Elinsky's Brother) WON the Dukes 50/50 Jack Pot of more than $2,400 dollars!!! Terry, I have to think your brother was there and drew your ticket! The Cougars welcome several new volunteers to our staff; Vince Gibbs has generously taken on a role as our Billet Coordinator and will handle all billet communications and responsibilities. We have posted an online application, if you are interested in becoming a Billet for the Cobourg Cougars please CLICK HERE to submit your application. The Cougars also welcome new professional trainers, Port Hope's, Joe Aiello and Cobourg's, Erica Davis. The cougars are also adding several other new staff to be announced in the weeks ahead. Due to the size of our new rink and in our efforts to expand on the services and game day experience, the Cougars have several new volunteer openings. If you would like to become part of the Cougars organization and enjoy being part of this great community team please contact us. For a list of our opening positions please CLICK HERE. EVENTS; the Cobourg Cougars will have a car wash at Canadian Tire on June 4th, come out and support the Cougars by having your car all shined up by our Cougars staff and players. The Cougars will be part of the Cobourg Waterfront Festival this year during the July 1st Long Weekend. We will be selling Season Passes and tickets to our home opener (you won't want to miss this - more details to follow), we will also be showing our Cougars DVD, the players will sign autographed hockey cards for the kids. Lots of great free stuff and prizes and of course the 'Coug' will be on hand maybe in his beach attire. :) Our Cougars Alumni Reunion Golf Tournament has be scheduled for July 16th at Dalewood Golf Club. Golf Packages and Dinner and Dance Packages are available. This will be a great evening and we are hoping to book our live band Skindavey. We have the 74 Cougars Alumni helping out and will raise funds for their 'Yes We Can' Charity. Please see information below regarding this event and contact Kelly Martin to reserve your spot. Sincerely, Cougars Junior A Hockey Northumberland's Official Junior 'A' Hockey Team!

Cougars welcome new bench boss

COBOURG - After several years in the Greater Toronto Area, Justin Teakle is looking forward to coaching in a smaller community.
Teakle, a 26-year-old Toronto resident, is the new head coach of the Cobourg Cougars. The former Ontario Junior A Hockey League player with Pickering and Milton has also coached in the league for the past five years with the Streetsville Derbys, which recently merged operations with the Cougars.
Teakle is entering his sixth year as a coach. He went behind the Streetsville bench following his playing career and was an assistant coach for three years before taking on the head coaching reins the past two years.
In Cobourg, he replaces Wayne Marchment, whose contract was not renewed by the Cougars after their season ended.
Teakle, in an interview with Northumberland Today, recalled the "fan support" every time the Derbys were in Cobourg to take on the Cougars.
"Seeing the fans being there and supporting their team at home especially was huge on me because I think it elevates a team's play at home," Teakle said.
While the Cougars enjoyed an average attendance of 323 ranked seventh out of 31 teams through 25 regular season games this past season, the Derbys didn't share the same fan support.
According to the OJHL web-site, the Derbys were

Teakle a good choice, Cougars alumnus says

COBOURG -- Former Cobourg Cougars forward Zack Woolford believes Justin Teakle is a good fit as the new head coach of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League club.
Woolford played his final OJHL season, during the 2009-2010 campaign, with the Streetsville Derbys, where Teakle coached the past five years -- three as an assistant and the past two as head coach. The Derbys recently merged operations with the Cougars to play out of Cobourg.
Teakle was officially announced as the Cougars new head coach earlier this week.
"He's definitely a players' coach," said Woolford, who played for the Cougars in 2008-2009 before going to Streetsville. "He cared for the players, was always on time, never missed anything. He definitely had a good hockey sense."
There were a couple of coaching changes in Streetsville, Woolford said, while he was there before Teakle took the reigns as head coach. The Derbys ended up placing fifth in their division and winning a playoff round.
"We did pretty well for a team that wasn't expected to do that well," Woolford said, noting it was the most successful Streetsville team in recent years.
Individually, Woolford had a strong season as well, registering 25 goals and 27 assists in 50 games with the Derbys, up from 14 goals and 12 assists the previous year with Cobourg.
Teakle was a good leader with motivating pre-game speeches and an "open-door policy," Woolford said. "You good go in an talk to him about anything."

COBOURG, ON-The Cobourg Cougars are pleased to announce today that they have named Cobourg's own Todd Diminie as the team's new General Manager. Todd joined the Cougars before the start of the 2010-2011 season as the Club's Director of Hockey Operations following a successful five year stint with the Bowmanville Eagles, as a Scout, Director of Scouting and Assistant GM. Todd has over 7 years of experience at the Jr. A level and he has helped identify numerous young hockey players interested in developing their skills and progressing to higher levels within hockey. "It is indeed an honour and thrill to be taking on the General Manager role with the Cobourg Cougars organization as we ready for our move to the Cobourg Community Centre in the weeks ahead," stated Diminie. "It is an exciting time to be with the Cougars organization; it has proven its dedication and commitment not only to the community but to its on-ice product as well and I am excited about the opportunity extended to me by the ownership group to continue to strive for excellence in this new role," Diminie said. Along with Cobourg's new head coach, Justin Teakle and returning assistant coach Brad Whelan - who also hails from Cobourg and is a former captain of the Club - Diminie will play a leading role in the upcoming Cougars Rookie camp on May 7 - 8, 2011 at the New Cobourg Community Centre. As a result of a further down-sizing of the league from 31 to 27 teams, it is expected that this camp will be filled with high quality talent interested in playing at the highest level of junior hockey under the auspices of the Ontario Hockey Association. "The Cobourg Cougars organization is extremely excited to have Todd help guide the Club into the top ranking of Jr. A clubs in Ontario" stated Marc Mercier, Cougars Governor. "Being from Cobourg, Todd brings a keen awareness of the community and, like the ownership group, he understands our goal to be among the best Junior "A" franchises in Canada in the near-term." For more than 45 years, the Cobourg Cougars has been a strong, community-based and well-supported junior hockey organization. During this past season, the Cougars enjoyed once again being among the top quartile of clubs in attendance and have laid the foundation for on-ice success.

COBOURG COUGARS MOURN LOSS OF MR. 50/50
Longtime Cougar volunteer John Elinsky dies
Apr 07, 2011 - 04:30 AM
Paul J. Rellinger
COBOURG -- Although there were tears in her eyes, you could hear the love Wendy Elinsky had for her husband John in her voice. John Elinsky, 70, a long-time Cobourg Cougar volunteer, died on March 28 after a three-year battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Sitting at the kitchen table in the King Street West house she and Mr. Elinsky called home for 41 years, Ms. Elinsky recalled the first time they met. In was in 1967, when she first met him at the bank where she worked. Mr. Elinsky was working at the Dominion grocery store, where the present day No Frills sits on Division Street. It was love at first sight. "From then on, I always helped my mother grocery shop," said Ms. Elinsky with a smile. The couple married on May 25, 1968, and had two children, first a daughter, Tana, now a nurse in New York, and then Ryan, a chef in Toronto. It wasn't long after John and Wendy wed and settled into their new home on King Street, that Mr. Elinsky began his love affair with Cobourg hockey. Already an avid hockey fan, and sports enthusiast for that matter, Mr. Elinsky began his hockey volunteer work in the 1970s as a trainer and equipment manager for the then Cobourg Dusters. "John always enjoyed the game," said Ms. Elinsky. "It differed from his daily life of working in the grocery store and he loved being at the arena." From the Dusters, Mr. Elinsky eventually became in involved with Cougars. Ms. Elinsky said during her husband's 40 years of volunteer work with the Cougars, Mr. Elinsky served in many capacities. He sat on the Cougars' executive, and served as the team trainer and equipment manager for many seasons. In 1998, Mr. Elinsky was honoured with Larry Wood Memorial Award, handed out to those who show outstanding contribution and dedication to the Cobourg Cougars. He was once again honoured in 2002, when the Town of Cobourg awarded him with plaque citing his outstanding volunteer contribution to the community. But to those who knew Mr. Elinsky best, and welcomed his smiling face inside the doors at Cobourg's Memorial Arena, he will always be known as Mr. 50/50. Along with his brother Terry, Mr. Elinsky would greet Cougars' fans before every home game selling 50/50 tickets. "Everybody bought a ticket from John," said Ms. Elinsky, who added ...
