 History of the Hart TrophyThe Hart Memorial Trophy was presented to the National Hockey League in 1923 by Dr. David Hart. Dr. Hart was the father of Cecil Hart, the former coach and manager of the Montreal Canadiens. Cecil Hart coached the Canadiens between 1926-27 and 1938-39, winning back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1930 and 1931.The trophy is presented to the most valuable player in the National Hockey League during the regular season. Voting is conducted by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. The initial winner was Frank Nighbor of the Ottawa Senators, awarded the Hart at the conclusion of the 1923-24 season. Wayne Gretzky has collected the most Harts-nine in total, with eight from his days as an Edmonton Oiler and one as a King in Los Angeles.  History of the Lady Byng TrophyLady Byng, wife of Canada's Governor-General at the time, presented the Lady Byng Trophy in 1925. After Frank Boucher of the New York Rangers won the award seven times in eight seasons, he was given the trophy to keep and Lady Byng donated another trophy in 1936. After Lady Byng's death in 1949, the National Hockey League presented a new trophy, changing the name to the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.The trophy is an annual award given to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability. IN THE NEWS Cobourg Cougars keep growing, winningNORTHUMBERLAND NEWS COBOURG -- The Cobourg Cougars are nobody's punching bag anymore. The Junior A team that is currently burning up the ice at the Cobourg Memorial Arena bears little resemblance to the 2005 group that won just six of its 49 games. That was the first of five consecutive losing seasons for the club (including last season). But this year's Cougars aren't doing much losing at all. They're currently on a six game winning streak, with their most recent victory coming at home over Streetsville on Monday, Nov. 8. Nearing the halfway point of the regular season at the 22 game mark, the Cougars are 15-6-1. With 31 points, they're tied with the Wellington Dukes for top spot in the East Division of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. Only three teams in the entire OJHL have more points this early in the season. With a division leading 99 goals, they're scoring nearly at will. With only 65 goals allowed, they're keeping the puck out of their own net with consistency. In short, they're doing everything a hockey team needs to do to rack up the wins.
