Cougars earn point in OT
Sports
By JEFF GARD Northumberland Today.com
COBOURG
-Jake Taylor scored the only goal of a shootout Monday night as the
Peterborough Stars pulled out a 5-4 victory over the Cobourg Cougars,
which had their four-game winning streak snapped. Cobourg twice
trailed by three goals, 3-0 and 4-1, before eventually rallying to send
the Ontario Junior A Hockey League game into overtime. The Stars gained
the two points, but only an extra point more than the Cougars as they
earned one for the OT defeat."It
showed a lot of character with us coming back. I can't say enough about
the boys, especially Chewy (goalie Mathieu Cadieux) for holding us in,
in net," said Cobourg defenceman Kevin Van Dyk, who scored three
powerplay goals; twice with his club trailing by three in second period
and then the game-tying marker midway through the third. "You've got
to look at the positives sometimes," Van Dyk said. "It's very important
to get two points, but when you're down three goals, we'll take the one
point." Blake Sexton, Brett Gilmour, Justin Danforth and Derek
Foote were all stopped by Peterborough netminder Zac Fryia in the
shootout. Cadieux, meanwhile, turned aside attempts by the first three
Stars shooters -Corey O'Brien, Steve Evans and Troy Barss -before
Taylor scored on him. Asked, half-jokingly, if he should have
been selected for the shootout, Van Dyk replied (with a grin) "I didn't
really expect to go out there. "We've got a lot of guys that can
put the puck in the net, so I'll let them do that part," added Van Dyk,
who had registered five assists READ MORE ...
Cobourg Cougars running hotBy Jason Chamberlain - Northumberland Newsl
COBOURG -- The Cobourg Cougars are on a tear.
After losing the first two games of the season, the Junior A club
cruised to four straight wins, a streak during which they outscored
their opponents 25-6. The hot streak cooled a bit at the Cobourg
Memorial Arena on Monday, Sept. 27 when they lost 5-4 in a shootout to
the Peterborough Stars, but they still earned a point in the standings.
On Monday, the Cougars battled back from a deficit of 4-1
to force overtime thanks to a hat trick from Kevin Van Dyk and another
goal from Chris Albertini. Nothing was solved in overtime, and in the
shootout four Cougars were stymied by the Peterborough goaltender while
the fourth Star shooter finally beat Cobourg goalie Mathieu Cadieux to
win the game. Despite the loss, the team is still looking strong in the eyes of head coach Wayne Marchment. "We're playing better team defense and we've got a top of the line goalie," he said in reference of Cadieux.
After seven games, the Cougars are 4-2-1 for 9 points and are tied with
the Trenton Golden Hawks for second place in the East Division.
"The season just started, so we're not worried too much about
(standings). We just want to keep getting points," said Marchment.
"This East Division, there are a lot of good teams." The
Cougars can improve on their strong start on Sunday, Oct. 3 in Toronto
against the Junior Canadiens. They will return to the Memorial Arena on
Monday, Oct. 4 to host the Pickering Panthers. The puck drops at 7 p.m. |
