Program Update

 Dear Street Yoga Friends,

Just by opening this letter, you open yourself to the work that is happening everyday for Street Yoga youth. Our programming spans every day of the week, and we seek to spark a belief in the unlimited potential of every individual. In addition to my weekly Street Yoga class, I offer my time to Street Yoga in the capacity of building our community outreach, teacher training management, and development operations. This opportunity is a blessing in my life to combine my passions, and I invite you to find your place within our organization.

Your call for us to visit your community, and fan the flames of the yoga service conversation is truly astounding. The outreach for this organization is a dream, and every person I am blessed to meet, email, call, skype, and play with is another light in this journey towards true healing. It is absolutely a revolution of wellness that we are seeing our youth begin to open to.

Just as the sun now returns from the dark of the winter, our individual paths weave their way in and out of balance. Thank you for bringing your dedication that sustains our efforts.

It is my honor to share with you a recent project several of our office volunteers undertook to bring some clarity, joy, and reflection into our teacher training programs. In an effort to share the feedback from our trainees, we converted our paper survey documents into digital format! Here are a few comments from our Teacher Trainees across the nation.

"Wonderful insight to a totally different group of young people. I have so much respect for yoga teachers and social workers - awesome people! This training helped one to feel confident in being able to go into any environment and teach. As a yoga teacher in training this is invaluable! I can use much of what I learned with the general population as well. Thank you Katie the training was amazing!"
- Detroit, Aug 2011

"Mark has a special gift, a talent, for bringing peace and healing to the world through the training of service providers. He was able to hold space for a huge spectrum of diversity and that's no small feat!"
- San Diego, Nov 2011

"I loved the focus and reminder about the importance of self care and self study. That's so easy to forget- to remember is part of what it's all about! I rethought my view of yoga and the accessibility. I'm excited to rework what I do with kids in the classroom where I currently teach. T.J. is a great teacher and facilitator. Thank you!"
- Bend, Aug 2011

"Street yoga has made me feel included in a community finally. Thanks to all participants and teachers for the truth(s), empathy, and upcoming yogic (r)evolution. Keep. it. Street."
- NYC, Jan 2011

"I am completely inspired by this practice and way of looking at Yoga. I love and believe in what Street Yoga is trying to accomplish!"
- Portland, Mar 2011

We hear you:

"More focus on poses, asanas, sequences that are helpful for particular populations. Or at least resources geared toward this. More tips on alterations for specific populations."
-Portland, Aug 2011

"I'd like to get to know more people, gain knowledge, learn and start to teach for the program"
- Seattle Nov 2010

It is an honor to offer continuing education for our volunteers & community members. In the past year Portland, Seattle and New York City's monthly community meetings have featured leaders in wellness, communication, yoga asana, and many more topics. If you would like to build the Street Yoga community in your area with our support and network connections, please contact us!

Best Wishes to you,
Street Yoga: Seattle

There comes that mysterious meeting in life
when someone acknowledges who we are and what we can be,

Reflections

Springing into Action
"This week, day and night will exist in perfect balance.... take a moment this week, and honor this opportunity to honor the element of Spring in your life. In Chinese medicine, the season of Spring is associated with the Wood element. Wood exemplifies the energy of growth, change, and pushing through obstacles. Stand Tall, Plant your roots deeply, and remain flexible, rather than rigid so you don't snap. Think about the experience of anger - it is often the feeling of snapping that occurs when frustration and obstacles thwart us. Use the new energy of spring to get moving on projects. Spring is a time of action, change and rebirth.

Metta in March

Metta, or Loving-Kindness is a fundamental aspect of yoga service. Just as one gives, the receiving of these blessings is thousand-fold. Street Yoga creates the acceptance of gifts with deep gratitude, and in turn spreads this love to those most in need.

Join Us! Yoga Service ConferenceThank you to the National Association of Social Workers, Oregon Chapter, for including Street Yoga as an exhibitor in this year's annual conference held on March 16, 2012.  It was a pleasure to connect with Social Workers from the entire state, as well as the Executive Director for the National Organization who traveled to the conference from Washington, DC.  We welcome collaboration with Social Workers as partners in our mission, and we want to remind you all that you can receive 14 CE's by taking our Teacher Training. Happy Social Work Month!

Street Yoga Teacher Trainings

Become a part of our Global Network!

Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga.
In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.

We offer monthly weekend teacher trainings in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.

Street Yoga's Core Training offers CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers.
