expressing love through play

Dear Friends,
I had the good fortune to spend the past weekend building community and expressing love through play with the amazing people behind Circus Yoga. The experiential weekend provided opportunity to practice bringing the teachings of yoga alive through creative and fun group activities. The activities leant themselves to a co-creative process, inviting all who were present to be heard and included, with a lot of hearty laughs along the way.
This beautiful experience reminded me once again of the myriad forms that love can take. Sometimes we express love by listening deeply to another's hurts, but sharing in another's joy is equally as important. What better way to cultivate joy than through playful movement that allows everyone to let go and laugh deeply?
The weekend reminded me of a counselor at one of Street Yoga's partner sites who told us how much the students relish being seen as normal kids, rather than wounded youth. This is not to imply that we should ignore the wounds that these youth carry. Rather, she was saying that it is also important for these youth to see the part of themselves that is just like any other child - the part that wants to play, laugh, and feel valued and included - reflected back to them through another's eyes.
We look forward to bringing the joy of play to more youth this year. We hope you can find moments of play in your lives too!
With warm regards,
Stephanie Toby
