Volunteer Update

Street Yoga"I am so happy to be a part of such a wonderful organization of people committed to yoga as service. Yoga is such a gift in my life and I'm thankful every day for my ability to invest in studying with wonderful teachers and developing my own practice. Street Yoga has inspired in me a sense of responsibility to these gifts: to share yoga with those who both can benefit greatly from it and who do not have access to it.

"It's been teaching me a lot to work with the students at SSC [Structured Skills Center - Street Yoga Program] these past few months. I feel fortunate to have a group of students to work with over the course of the school year. It gives me the opportunity to get to know them over a longer period of time than is often possible. I'm working on my own philosophy and purpose as a teacher, and teaching this class grounds me in trying to give my students tools they can continue to develop and use throughout their life.

The high-schoolers at SSC are inspiring, and sometimes amazingly intuitive and interested in the practice. In my class last Tuesday we did our warm ups, a series of gentle spiralling movements - neck, shoulders, wrists, arms, hips, knees, ankles. I pointed out that it can sometimes seem like everything is about straight lines and right angles. Jory says "that's from everything that is man-made", emphatically shaking his fists towards the ceiling. "that's right, but there are lots of spirals in nature, and in our everyday life". For kids that spend their entire day inside 2 rooms with little opportunity to be outside and experience nature, and much of their time at home playing video games or watching TV, it can be wonderful to discover natural rhythms and patterns in their own body. Teaching them to tune into the calming nature of their own breathing, and simple postures and movements connected to the breath, gives them skills to help cope with negative emotions and feelings, and practical ways to feel better.

Yoga PostureThey get very little exercise during the school day, with no PE facilities to use - I was told when I started that 40 minutes of PE often consisted of playing Cranium. Fortunately yoga postures can be done anywhere, and once you learn a few you like, you become empowered with ways to keep your body healthy, no matter what your surroundings are.

They sometimes complain of feeling depressed and are listless at the beginning of class (I'm sure many of these students with challenging behavior patterns are medicated) - linking breathing and movement, some focusing on the breath, laying down and relaxing, and bringing to mind and body a feeling of peace,  and holding their mind there for a little while, can lift the spirits. By challenging them to focus on doing the movements I teach and to tune into their breath, they may begin to notice that practice can change how you feel, and even how you react.

Namaste!

Thoughts & Reflection

In January, Street Yoga celebrated a One Year Blog Anniversary! Our Blog Curator, Crystal Southcote compiled a few of our top blog posts from the past year
» TOP BLOG POSTS OF 2011

 The Power of Vulnerability

The yoga class setting provides the ultimate opportunity for connection to occur. Connection consists of failures, successes, connections, disconnections. Brene Browne, in her Ted Talk, discusses her academic research into connection, and her discovery of the element of shame, which is at its core, is the fear of disconnection. "The things that underpins us is excruciating vulnerability" This ability to reveal one's true self change the energy of a classroom in a beautiful way. Connecting with Street Yoga provides a path of support, healing and transformation that can actually begin to heal our world.

Yoga Speak: Imagine You Are Telling a Story Kids

Leading a plethora of audiences can get tricky, especially when you are dealing with trauma, abuse or PTSD, to name a few.  When teaching yoga it is always fun to tell a story and play with the fact that poses can physically paint a picture.

I like using words that everyone can understand and connect with on a human level.  It is easy to get carried away with Sanskrit terms or fancy expressions.  Basic, universal terms, can allow your diverse group to connect on a deeper level.  For many, trying to twist or bend is already difficult enough.  Using clear or simple words, will help your students cultivate a sense of belonging and strengthen their practice, without further confusion.
Tell me a story, please...

The Song of the Self

In yoga we aim for balance. We cultivate our abilities to experience many aspects of life at once: groundedness and lightness, stillness and movement, alertness and relaxation. Little by little, we become better able to step back from the messes of being human and witness ourselves with love and compassion. We create space to hold deep sadness with tenderness, defeat with hope, frustration with some shred of joy. We work to see other people as more than how they present to us, and ourselves as more than the single identity that feels strongest (addict, survivor, mother, child, employee...) But we must remember that this is all a practice. We make mistakes and sometimes it feels as though we have to start all over again. The unexpected hardships and immeasurable joys of life both challenge us and highlight parts of ourselves that we have perhaps never known.

Street Yoga Teacher Trainings

Become a part of our Global Network!

Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga.
In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.

We offer monthly weekend teacher trainings in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.

Street Yoga's Core Training offers CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers.
