Dear Friends,

As we settle in to the new year and the days begin to lengthen once again, the return of the light is often a welcome gift. We are reminded that life is full of cycles, and that darkness is indeed a womb from which light emerges.

I've read that in the past, some people feared that daylight might not return, and thus they designed rituals to compel or encourage the sun to grant them longer days once again. While it is extremely unlikely that anyone reading this newsletter has the same fear, this experience can be used as a beautiful metaphor for other fears that are common in our modern lives. We may be struggling through a difficult time and fear that the struggle will never end; our joy will never return; the chaos will never settle.

Circle of LightWhen faced with my own struggles, I am comforted by thoughts of the turning of the seasons, and the reminder that every winter is followed by spring. External circumstances shift - even when that shift is almost imperceptible as it occurs, and only noticeable when examined over time, like the slowly lengthening days. We endeavor to impart this comforting knowledge to the youth we serve, who may not have the agency to completely change their current circumstances, but who will have increasing choices as they enter adulthood. We seek to help them access the light within, which can guide the way to a healthier and happier life.

After turning inward for (even a moment of) quiet reflection during the darkest of days, we start to bring our new intentions out into the world. For Street Yoga, this includes starting programs at three new sites this month, among other new projects that we will be sharing with our community this year. Thank you for joining us in this journey!

With warm regards,

Stephanie Toby
