Gratitude + Generosity

Thank You

A Word from Mark

Mark Lilly"If one approaches yoga with a high sense of curiosity, and a firm willingness to accept with gentleness the findings within oneself, yoga is an invaluable practice. It's not for the timid, or the overly striving, but in the words of Sri Nisargadatta, "if you are truly earnest and honest, the attainment of reality will be yours." That's what yoga's good for, attaining a truthful reality about your self and everything, an understanding of total love and deep interconnectedness. Once you have those simple bits in hand, it's far easier to decide what to do with the time you have left on this planet.

"The whole point of yoga is to become more truthful with yourself, and to follow precepts of humility and grace."

Thank you for joining Street Yoga on this path.

Program Update

PORTLAND, OR

A letter from our dedicated and light-bearing volunteer, Betsy Rose:

I ran a Street Yoga clothing donations drive in December at Pureheart yoga, and another studio I teach at. I asked specifically for womens yoga clothes, the response was amazing we ended up with 4 boxes of yoga clothes and most of them were new or almost new. There were 8 teenage girls at this facility, each of them got 2 new yoga outfits! The rest of the clothes went into storage, now as new girls enter the center they can also pick out a yoga outfit. One yogi got a $100 gift certificate to a grocery store.

I asked the girls while they were picking out their new outfits, what they wanted me to spend the money on. They asked for fresh fruits and veggies and hummus, wow how cool is that. I guess the facility lost funding for food, and the girls don't get much fresh foods anymore. I spent New Years Eve, buying mostly organic foods, then washing and preparing,

I also made them vegan cookies (oatmeal, peanut butter, blueberry and cranberry), and homemade bread (brown rice flour, whole wheat, and whole oats with rosemary and sage). I also got them 4 kinds of hummus. When I showed up they were all tired because they were allowed to stay up all night. So I had them do an hour of relaxing yoga.

While we enjoyed the food afterwards one of the girls said, "oh my gosh, Betsy is slouching!" I was,  I immediately sat up straight again.

We all laughed and one of the girls said,

"You're just like us." One thing I've really noticed, is how much these kids just want someone to relate to them, and listen. And I don't think there was any better way to bring in the new year. Happy 2012!"

Street Yoga Teacher Trainings

Become a part of our Global Network!

Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga.
In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.

We offer monthly weekend teacher trainings in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.

Street Yoga's Core Training offers CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers.
