Street Yoga Happenings November 2011

Mark LillyDear Friends,

I was invited to come to hold space for a number of community therapists, counselors and healers in North Belfast, an area that endured a large part of the trauma from the 40 years of the Troubles-the bloody near civil war that officially ended in the late '90's but which still extracts a toll on residents throughout the communities of Northern Ireland. I now invite you to share in this journey with me and explore your connection to the service of yoga...

SEA

Seattle Director of Operations, Stephanie Toby, shares:

SEA Oct 2011"When youth have had to form rigid, agressive, or explosive personalities in order to survive, the mask of personality can be especially frightening. For youth in these circumstances, it can be particularly depressing to believe that the self-protective personality is Who he or she Truly Is. Practicing yoga gives youth the opportunity to experience something different - to know that a sense of calm, a sense of strength, a sense of relief, a sense of joy is also possible. Perhaps it will lead them down the road to a greater understanding - that this deep, abiding peace is his or her truest self - and perhaps not...but at the very least, these youth will know that these states exist within them. Once someone experiences this shift, no one can tell them that another way of being is impossible.

All of us at Street Yoga are so grateful to collaborate with you, to help youth look underneath the mask and discover a new world within themselves. Thank you for making this healing and empowering work possible."

Street Yoga Seattle's November workshops offered a combination of lecture and experiential learning, taught by Seattle leaders in the fields of Yoga Therapy, counseling and kinesiology. This workshop series: Healing through Body Awareness raised funds to expand & support programs for youth in Seattle.

NYC

After the yearly summer break, the SY class at Covenant House NYC resumed this Fall. We are serving clients on the Women's Floor with a weekly class, taught by Dianne Bottad.

Did you see the piece on Service Yoga in the Yoga City NYC? It's hard to link to it, but if you go here, and then search for Street Yoga or my name, you will find it: http://www.yogacitynyc.com/yoga_week.php
Update: Unfortunately the Brownsville program mentioned here is on hold for now.

Bridging the Hearts and Minds of Youth

JOIN OUR FOUNDER, MARK LILLY. REGISTER FOR A POWERFUL WEEKEND OF HEALING
SEA Oct 2011

In 2002, Mark Lilly experienced yoga for the first time.

"I was given yoga as a gift by my wife about 10 years ago, Christmas. I went, reluctantly, but I found a practice that met immediate needs, and that I have been able to grow into ever since. That first day, practicing with my first teacher Sarahjoy Marsh of Portland, I found three beautiful synergies: a sense of community; a practice I could peruse the rest of my life that would support my body's wellbeing; and, a spiritual practice that I could direct myself, without pressure to conform or accept specific doctrine.

As for healing, yoga presents so many opportunities to be of service in healing. From a purely physical perspective, it is an obvious practice to tone muscles, build strength, increase flexibility, increase stamina and so much more. But it's the ancient science of yoga that underpins the asana practice with such a great wisdom, about breath and breathing, about an individual's multiple bodies, about exploring the inner reaches of one's being. These are the elements of yoga that for me allow healing to be so greatly enhanced with yoga."

As you know, the practice of bringing mindfulness to youth in educational, clinical, and community settings has received unprecedented attention over the past decade as parents, children, educators, clinicians and researchers have noticed the wide-ranging and beneficial effects of doing so. The implications and effects of this growing movement are wide-ranging, and impact the psychological, physical and social health and well-being of children and teens.

Street Yoga Teacher Trainings

Become a part of our Global Network!

 Street Yoga Flyer

We offer monthly weekend teacher trainings in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.

Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga. In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.

We now offer CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers for the SY Training.
