rising of the tide
Street Yoga Happenings July 2011
|
|
Dear Street Yoga Friends,
There is a power in harvest season that's palpable. Every ounce of energy from the sun is being used to make the bounty we enjoy late in summer. We here in Portland get some very needed vitamins (and hope, without luck, that the D will last all winter). People are buzzing around just like the bees and things feel full. Everyone is busy - but busy with nurtured moments of pleasure. And there is music everywhere.
The end of summer begins in August with a 'rising of the tide' as the abundant harvest season is just beginning. So we practice being generous receivers of that bounty. We practice holding space for the uncontrollable life force that is a ripe garden. We allow ourselves to sit wildly outward and exhaust ourselves with activity. Our schedules are full. We are full. Our Street Yoga family is feelin' it, too. We learn on the mat how valuable activity is as a contrast to the deep rest of savasana. One way to learn to really release and let go - is to feel the contrasting heat and power of energetic movement. So we exhaust ourselves on the mat with activity. Hearts full of life and gratitude. The work of the harvest living in the strength of asana practice. Each moment being an earned opportunity to let go and surrender.
With Metta (loving kindness),
Rachel Sample Executive Director

Program Update
|
Wendy Kaplan Trinity House Shelter in NYC "Those who did attend the morning workshops were benefit to a very special hour in which they had the opportunity to discover themselves in relationship to their body and mind in a new way, gaining some tools for relaxation, mindfulness and peace. What a gift.

Individuals like Elizabeth and organizations like Street Yoga allow us to provide a diverse array of services and experiences for homeless LGBT youth and young adults. I am acutely aware, you have other demanding dayjobs and obligations. Yet, your dedication to this programming is a testament to a shared belief that ANY youth and young adult deserves to feel safe, protected and able to pursue her or his own dreams. Please know that I extend my endless thanks for all the work and sacrifice that both of you, in different ways, have put into helping us offer these services to our residents."

Upcoming Street Yoga Teacher Trainings
|
|
We offer monthly weekend teacher trainings in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.
Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga. In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.
We now offer CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers for the SY Training.
