Introductory Note

Dear Street Yoga Seattle Community,

I love summertime. It inspires late night picnics at Golden Gardens, long bike rides after work, weekend hikes, and other joyful outdoor activities. The light infuses us with greater energy and enthusiasm.

What to do then, when the weather is a little damper and grayer than we'd like? Can we still find our own source of light, inside ourselves, to stregnthen and sustain us? Can we find inspiration by tapping into the greater energy of Life itself?

We absolutely can. This connection to our own joy, peace, strength, and inspiration is one of the great gifts of yoga.

When we know and experience this within ourselves, we can offer the same gift to the youth we serve. Their surroundings may be dismal, but that cannot extinguish the light within each and every one of them. To truly empower youth is not only to teach them that their strength can never be taken from them, it is to give them the viseral experience of their own light.

Thank you for helping Street Yoga to share that gift with Seattle youth. Happy summer!

With warm wishes,

Stephanie Toby, Seattle Director of Operations

and the rest of Street Yoga

Teaching Opportunities

Tyee High School

We are planning to start a Street Yoga class at Tyee Educational Complex this fall and are looking for a teacher who could commit for the 2011-2012 school year, or at least the first semester.

The complex is made up of 3 high schools that serve a high proportion of students struggling with poverty, abuse, PTSD, depression, and addiction. Bullying is a major issue. In addition, they have a large immigrant population, and many of these students are suffering from PTSD after living in refugee camps.

We will have more details on the class soon, but please let me know as soon as possible if you might be interested in teaching this class!

NeighborCare's Homeless Youth Clinic on 45th St.

We are looking for 1-2 people who are interested in being an on-call substitute for our class at NeighborCare's Homeless Youth Clinic in the Wallingford neighborhood. The clinic provides a variety of medical services for youth ages 12-23 who are homeless or in transition.

Details:

-The class takes place the 3rd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. or so.

-NeighborCare is unable to accept our volunteer processing, as they have extra steps they must go through as a clinic. Thus, you would need to fill out their paperwork and meet with their staff as well. Please do not contact them directly, though; contact me first at stephanie@streetyoga.org. Thank you!

Other Sites in the Near Future:

We currently have 7 sites on our waitling list and I will be contacting them in the coming weeks to start planning classes.

If you are interested in teaching in the near future, please email me at stephanie@streetyoga.org.
