Program Update
|
Kathryn Blau - Seneca House I had always been nervous to introduce any chanting into class, thinking it would be a little too "out there" for girls new to yoga. But one day this month I decided to go for it because there were just two girls who had been coming for awhile and obviously love yoga. I made sure they knew that it was optional, they could just listen. We did Om Santi Santi Santih, and they both LOVED it! I explained that santi means peace, and we can imagine peace for ourselves, sending it out to people we know, and to the whole world. They thought that was cool, and one girl walked around after class singing it to herself. Every week since then she has asked if we can do the peace song at the end of class. I don't think I'll do it every week, but it is always fun to introduce a new element into class, and sound and voice are definitely a powerful one! ................ read more about our work »

A Letter From Our Founder
|
|
Dear Ones,
In my many years with Street Yoga, I have to say last month I was gifted to share in one of the most moving events I've ever experienced.
The setting was the Cook County Juvenile Center, a sprawling complex comprising innumerable buildings housing courts, detention, police, probation, offices, support and more. It is a vast and imposing campus.
The context was a week of events focused on Restorative Justice put on by the Honorable Colleen Sheehan, Juvenile Court Judge for Cook County. The week's culmination was a Thursday I was blessed to be able to attend. The gathering was a get together of youth, police officers, judges, lawyers, probation officers, parents, community workers, and a few visitors such as myself. I was asked to share yoga with the group, which numbered almost a hundred.
The first session was information gathering. The youth were asked: "Have you ever been disrespected or threatened by a police officer?" The officers were asked: "Have you ever been disrespected or threatened by a citizen?" There was strong energy in that room, but everyone had come together because the situation in Chicago, as in many places, is dire. Five Chicago Police Officers were killed last year. Scores of young people were murdered. Few families remain untouched by violence.
People were hanging tough because the need is so high.
We then shared lunch in a tall, spacious inner atrium, and then I led a 25 minute yoga session. Armed officers, awkward teens, tough probation officers, well dressed attorneys all stretched and breathed together. Later, one of the officers said to me that we should do that yoga relaxation work on every shift at roll call, before the officers hit the streets. Things would be better he said, if officers could leave their stress and anger behind before hitting the streets.
The day concluded with small groups meeting with guides in Peace Circles, filling half a dozen courtrooms with tears and openness and hope beyond measure. To hear one officer tell how he used to be a gang leader, how he used to sell drugs, and how his mother became addicted, and how he knew it was his doing, was profound. His tears etched streaks in all our faces. He now shows up hard for the kids, as do so many of the other people i met that day. They are literally saving lives.
I honor all those today who are showing up on the front lines, first responders everywhere, who are stepping towards the wounds we suffer, trying to make things better, one breath at a time.
With Deepest Respect Blessings, m

Upcoming Street Yoga Teacher Trainings
|
|
We offer monthly weekend teacher trainings in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, homelessness, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.
Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga. In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.
We now offer CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers for the SY Training. Sign up now!
