Introductory Note

Dear Street Yoga Seattle Community,

I am continually in awe of our community -- the teachers who donate their time to work with the youth served by Street Yoga, our partner sites that work hard at meeting their clients' multiple needs, the community memebrs who share their expertise and provide ongoing training at our monthly potlucks, the businesses and individals who support our work financially, the volunteers who donate their time and skills...

We're all in this together. As Martin Luther King said, "What affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be."

In that spirit of interconnectedness, we are called to put our love and compassion into action. Especially in difficult economic times such as these, when social service sites experience an increased demand for shelter, food, and other support services, it is imperative that all members of our community feel loved and cared for. A recent Seattle Times article reported that the "stress of being homeless can sometimes render people unable to function at a basic level." This is what we are working to heal through Street Yoga. Working to support our community, especially its most vulnerable members, in healing is an act of great love.

Thank you for sharing that love, and, in doing so, making our community stronger.

With warm wishes,

Stephanie Toby, Seattle Director of Operations

and the rest of Street Yoga

Teaching Opportunities

Exciting Teaching Opportunities in Seattle!

If you are interested in any of these, please email me at stephanie@streetyoga.org

Spruce Street

We will have an opening for someone to teach every other week at Spruce Street, starting in April.

Details:

  • Spruce Street is a secure crisis center for runaway and street-involved youth, and is operated by Pioneer Human Services. They provide temporary housing and support services for up to 14 days. More information can be found here.
  • The classes currently takes place on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m., but there may be some flexibility to change the day and time to accommodate the new teacher's schedule.
  • One of our current teachers will remain teaching every other week, so that class takes place every Wednesday, but the two Street Yoga teachers alternate the days that they teach.
  •  The site is located at 1002 E. Spruce Street in Seattle.

Casa de los Amigos

An opportunity to teach weekly classes at Casa de los Amigos begins in March.

 Details:

  • Casa de los Amigos (under YouthCare) is a shelter for homeless, undocumented Latino youth ages 12-17. The shelter provides meals, educational programming, counseling, and life skills sessions, while staff work to find permanent placement for the youth.
  • The class takes currently takes place on Mondays from 4-5 p.m., but there may be some flexibility on changing the time to accommodate the new teacher's schedule.
  • The site is located at 3601 NE 123rd St in Seattle.
  • Most of the youth speak Spanish and thus we greatly prefer a Spanish-speaker for this site. There is a possibility of having the staff translate, but our first priority is to have someone who is comfortable with the Spanish language.

Other Sites in the Future

Are you interested in teaching in the future at a different site?

Please email me at stephanie@streetyoga.org and we can start the process by having you fill out a volunteer application. This will help facilitate a quicker placement as we create partnerships with new sites and have openings at current sites.

Potlucks

The 2011 potlucks take place the first Thursday of each month, from 6-8 pm, at my house (3917 Midvale Ave N, Unit A, Seattle 98103).

The next potluck will be Thursday, March 3rd. As Caroline Goodell was unable to make our last potluck due to an illness, she has rescheduled to present at our March potluck. She will be speaking about teaching Kinesthetic Awareness to youth and has extensive background in working with youth recovering from trauma. You can read more about Caroline here.

Opportunity to Serve - Seattle's Executive Committee

We are starting a new Executive Committee session in March and are looking for new members!

The Seattle Executive Committee serves as an advisory board for the Seattle Branch of Street Yoga.

The committee meets once per month for two hours in a conference room near the Whole Foods on Denny Way. Currently, we meet the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:30, although the day and time will change to accommodate the new group. The initial commitment is to serve for 6 months.

We are going to focus this year on fundraising (cultivating new individual donors, gathering business sponsorships) and outreach. We will have trainings during our meetings to build these skills and support one another in these efforts. Each committee member agrees to raise or donate a self-determined amount of money for the branch each session. We also report to the Board of Directors in Portland (via phone/Skype) as needed.

The Executive Committee has space for up to 8 members and we currently have 5.

If you are interested in joining the committee, please email me at stephanie@streetyoga.org and we can talk more! Thank you.

There are many other ways to get involved with the Seattle Branch of Street Yoga!

Here are a few ideas:

  • Have a special skill related to yoga, mindfulness, wellness, or our clients (youth and caregiviers struggling with homelessness, poverty, addiction, abuse and trauma)? Volunteer to provide a one-hour training at one of our monthly potlucks!
  • Have experience with behind-the-scenes work such as accounting, bookkeeping, marketing, fundraising, grant writing, etc? Volunteer to help us out with some of these tasks!
  • Have some old (gently used, please!) mats lying around, or know a person or studio that does? Donate the mats for use in Street Yoga classes!
  • Have a desire to help but you aren't sure where you'd fit in? Email me at stephanie@streetyoga.org and we can brainstorm together!

  • PLEASE NOTE that we are currently looking to borrow a projector for our trainer's presentation at the April potluck. Please email me at stephanie@streetyoga.org if you know of a projector that we could use.

Thank you again for being a part of the Street Yoga Seattle community!

I'll leave you all with this quote...

Heart Earth

"When I speak of love I am not speaking of some sentimental and weak response...There is a power in love that our world has not discovered yet. We must discover the power of love, the power, the redemptive power of love. When we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world."
