markA Letter From Our Founder

 Dear Friends,

Seeds of RealizationAs we make our selections and fill our baskets with seeds for the spring and summer, we hold so much in our hearts. These are seeds of faith, because we believe that the world still works as it was designed, and that each tiny morsel of life will actually push its way out of the hard shell that surrounds it and bring forth a new being. They are seeds of hope for a generation that will offer itself fully to each of us, sharing flowers and nourishment, bouquets of evanescent beauty that enrich each footstep through the garden.

A mid-winter's contemplation might have us asking if the seed knows itself to be perfect before it sprouts, if each seed recognizes its fully realized self before it ever sees the first rays of sunshine, if each flower anticipates with glowing excitement the colors that will sign from its petals.

Each seed is already perfect, and contains a perfectly coherent blueprint to realize its most mighty and wondrous self --whether it will sprint to fruition as an early spring poppy, or deliberately unfurl itself as a might oak.

To see that perfection in the tiny bits within a seed packet is not so hard. But seeing that within the tough leather armor that a kid struggling to survive on the streets wears for protection is another skill altogether. We forget with people at times, to look beneath the tough exterior to see the perfection within; we forget to remember that each of us contains within a blueprint for total realization, a roadmap for complete expression of self's unique story that merely awaits tender care and diligent nurturing.

That's a task we have gladly taken on with Street Yoga. All of us who teach or share time with the youth ask ourselves over and over again until we can't miss it, to witness the perfect beauty within each person we greet. We demand that we behold nothing less than the complete realization of each person as our mission, and accept that we too continue to evolve and challenge ourselves, so that we may better serve others.

When we can see through the sulking glare and the jagged barriers of the frightened boy in foster care to the seed of distinction that lies within, we create an opportunity for that seed to grow. The sunlight does not need to coax each seed to life. Rather, it offers its magnificence as widely as it can, to all who might feel it, and lets life flourish in as many ways as it possibly can.

May we serve as the sun serves, without questions, shining equally on all, inviting each person we meet to fully open to magnificence and truest beauty.

Thank you for supporting us!

Blessings,

m

Sleeping in the Forest

By Joanna Cowan

I wanted to tell you about a recent moment I had with one of my girls. It was before class began and she asked me if I could bring back the poetry book I had with me the previous week and read it to them every savasana. It was a Mary Oliver book of poetry, some beautiful words about nature. She said that the poem about the birds was so sweet, she felt so at peace for that moment, like there was no other place she thought she should be. She said she just felt right for that moment. How lovely!

Sleeping in the ForestSleeping in the Forest

by Mary Oliver

I thought the earth

remembered me, she

took me back so tenderly, arranging

her dark skirts, her pockets

full of lichens and seeds. I slept

as never before, a stone

on the riverbed, nothing

between me and the white fire of the stars

but my thoughts, and they floated

light as moths among the branches

of the perfect trees. All night

I heard the small kingdoms breathing

around me, the insects, and the birds

who do their work in the darkness. All night

I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling

with  luminous doom. By morning

I had vanished at least a dozen times

into something better.

The Oregonian features Street Yoga volunteer Bibi McGill at Street Yoga's program hosted by Rosemary Anderson High School.

"She got hooked on yoga in her first class, in 1998. On the road, she practices yoga six days a week to keep up the energy for nonstop performances. She moved to Portland, the city she began calling home three years ago, when Beyoncé announced her break from touring.

She was assigned to Rosemary Anderson after taking a training course in September with
Street Yoga
, a nonprofit that equips people to teach yoga to troubled teenagers and the impoverished.

Become a part of our Global Network!

We offer monthly weekend teachers' training in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, homelessness, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.

Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga. In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.

We now offer CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers for the SY Training.
