A Note from Mark Lilly, Street Yoga founder and president

Dear Friends,
  Mark Lilly Image
It's nominally the Time of Giving. I like to think we're becoming a people who give all year round, and not just when the calendar says it's time. So be it; this holiday season I have gifted myself some time to reflect, on what's vital to me, on what we do at Street Yoga. I am grateful for that small present to myself.

As I type, and listen to the thoughts flowing from some spring in my head, I notice the space between the words. It is the space that differentiates a blur of sounds into intelligible units of meaning. I recall, too, a teacher I had who said that healing comes in the space between the breaths.

When we approached our Mindful Parents and Caregivers work, in the very beginning, the task we laid our for ourselves was to find a way to help parents on the edge with that half second of crazy time when all hell is breaking loose, the half second when anger is inhaling an explosion, when fists are raised, when chaos threatens to break apart whatever stability has been patched together during the infrequent moments of calm. We wanted to interrupt that moment of violence, and break the cycle of despair that gets passed from generation to generation when anger wins and calm is absent.

Our path was to slow everything down, to teach the parents how to breathe slowly, attentively, how to create space between the breaths. None of them thought it was possible; none even knew there was a path away from the eruptive fears that were so powerful. One breath at a time --sitting, standing, re-enacting, singly and in pairs-- we taught each other how to breathe with attentiveness and space.

As we progressed through the breadth of what we experience in "this moment" --the sensations, feelings, thoughts, memories: all those triggers-- we were able to help each other sort out the chaos, and see within the maelstroms places to hold fast. From those new vantage points, we were able to see paths away from the anger and towards peace; paths away from judgment and towards acceptance; paths away from fear and towards Love.

Our work is to create space; it is the gift we give every day that we show up with Street Yoga. It's our Practice, breathing slowly, making space between the breaths, healing our own wounds, so that we can guide others towards a spacious place where Love has infinitely more room to live, and breathe.

Blessings

Street Yoga in Seattle
From Katie Arrants, Lead Street Yoga Trainer and Teacher

Katie Arrants, who works at Casa de los Amigos in Seattle, shares an inspirational story.  She writes:

"In the middle of yoga class as I was first teaching the girls how to do sun salutations, the on-call staff asked if I could briefly come take a phone call. None of the Spanish-speaking staff were available, and this staff person needed someone to explain that the Spanish-speaking caller would need to call back in an hour in order to reach the right person.

I told the girls to pause while I quickly took the call. As I returned to the room, I could see through the doorway that the girls were teaching each other the sun salutation--bending over, looking up with confused but smiling expressions, asking each other what came next. It was very sweet, and as I returned I encouraged them to continue with their teaching, so we rotated and allowed them each to lead our little group in the sun salutations.  Such great participation and leadership!"

Thank you Katie! We are all so inspired.

Upcoming Street Yoga Teacher Trainings

Be a part of Street Yoga's Global Network
We offer monthly weekend teachers' training in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges that stem from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, homelessness, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas.

Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga. In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building.

We now offer CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers for the SY Training.

You may associate yoga with a yoga studio or a health club setting, but have you ever associated yoga with a school setting? Research has shown that school yoga has many benefits. Aside from the benefits that yoga has on the physical well-being of children, school yoga has been shown to reduce problem behavior, test anxiety, and anger. It has also been shown to increase self-regulation and focus, according to Karma Carpenter, founder and director of the Association of School Yoga and Mindfulness
