| A Note from Mark Lilly, Street Yoga founder and president
|
| | Dear friends, When Adrienne asked me the theme for this month's musing, i immediately
responded "Survival." I spent Monday afternoon and evening with my son in
the Emergency Room, exploring with doctors why his heart spent two
straight hours beating 240 times per minute. It was trying, tiring,
scary, and though it seems we'll be just fine, humbling once again. In our recent Street Yoga training in Encino, one woman got up to teach
during our Situational Yoga section. She was instructed to teach
Tadasana as if to a group of women living in a shelter, to make the pose
real, to answer the question "Why bother?", to help these women survive.
We role-played those women in the shelter, and she asked us to stand, to remember all
the times we had to stand during the week: when waiting to fill out
another form at the social security office, while waiting for the bus on
the way to a job interview across town, while carrying our kids. She
asked us to stand a little bit stronger, because we deserved it, deserved to feel
strong. We deserved to feel OK in our bodies, to feel a little bit of
hope and possibility. She infused a simple Tadasana with lifetimes of
survival. By the end, i was nearly in tears. That's it! That's what Street Yoga's
all about. It's about helping people survive the hard times and the
scary times, and about magnifying the good and the dignified in each of
us, no matter where we live, no matter our circumstance. Remember that the next time you stand tall in Tadasana, that there's so much
at stake in every breath we take. Blessings, m

| Meet Rachel Fachner, our Interim Executive Director
|
| | Hello friends, advocates and community members of Street Yoga!
I am excited to introduce myself and join in your efforts toward change within the Portland community and beyond. I arrive at Street Yoga after passionately serving the community as an educator and non-profit manager. I've worked in both the private and public sectors in finance, management, and education. I first bridged my practice of yoga into the business world when I began working in finance at New York's OM Yoga Center, which led me to become the financial manager of several other organizations of both non-profit and standard structure. My work as an educator brought me to the youth communities that Street Yoga serves, and I have experience in curriculum building in both traditional and non-traditional settings. In addition to finance and education, I have intimately worked in non-profit consultation with Decisions Decisions here in Portland, where I've assisted many local and national organizations strategize and grow. I have practiced yoga for 12 years, and I am thrilled to continue to participate in the community I serve through a practice I advocate.
Rachel Fachner
Adrienne Boxer, Street Yoga's Executive Director will still be in the office until November 19 working closely with Rachel.

| Meet Alice Noyes, our new Development Associate
|
| | Hello Street Yoga! I'm so excited to be taking on the position of Development Associate for Street Yoga. When I moved to Portland a few years ago, the Street Yoga Teacher Training was my first experience of the yoga community in Portland. The spirit of compassion and giving is so strong within the Street Yoga network, and I look forward to growing with you all as we share our mission of peace! Light and Love, Alice Noyes
About Alice Noyes: Alice finds joy exploring the sacred spaces, finding the silence between the breath, between movement and stillness, in lightness and darkness. Yoga reaches into our innermost core of being and heals physically, emotionally and spiritually. Alice seeks to share this connection and ancient tool for finding our most authentic selves. Alice teaches at Yoga Bhoga and is the Community Organizer for MeetUp.com/YogaPDX. She loves to share yoga with all people, of all abilities and all walks of life. She is an eternal student, exploring Ayurveda, meditation, asana and more. She believes strongly that life is a gift, for what happens to us, happens for us.

| | Street Yoga at Trillium Family Services From Laura Mattison, Street Yoga teacher
"There's
a visable change in the
energy and the demenor
of the kids after a good
class. They come into a
class looking tentative,
tired, and skeptical,
but after a successful
class, everyone seems
calm but engaged. At
the
beginning, people are
sitting at the back of
their mats, looking at
their feet, or some are
on their belly,
figetting, that kind of
thing. At the end of a good
class, most of them are
sitting straight and
cross-legged and looking
at me and often, with a
smile!" Street Yoga classes at
Trillium are sponsored
by YoYoYogi.

| Upcoming Street Yoga Teacher Trainings
|
| | We offer monthly weekend teachers' training in cities across the country for community members interested in learning how yoga serves vulnerable young people and their families, not only homeless youth, but also young people who are faced with challenges stemming from overcoming the pain of sexual and physical abuse, homelessness, mental illness or familial substance addiction and other traumas. Trainings are open to experienced yoga teachers as well as those new to yoga. In the past we've had massage therapists, nurses, social workers, teachers and many others join us for a weekend of connection, learning and soul-building. We now offer CEUs through the Yoga Alliance and the National Association of Social Workers for the SY Training.
