December 2011

Ruby BrightDear :

"Giving Back" is the focus of this issue of Reaching Out. The magnitude of need in the Memphis community can be overwhelming. This reality often makes it challenging to decide how to direct your charitable gifts. The holiday season marks the end of the year and a time for reflection. This time of giving thanks and celebrating the goodness around us is filled with gratitude for the commitment and generosity of our friends. Your support makes it possible for us to partner with local non-profit agencies providing programs and services that help to create a brighter future for 15,875 women and children each year.

When asked, "why give" and "to whom do I give", your gifts to the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis is one of the ways you express your concern and compassion for the women and children in the most need. It is this kind of thoughtful manner of "giving back" with your heart, means and volunteerism that hold Memphis steady during tough economic times. The opportunity to help others strengthen their financial wellbeing and family stability is what fuels your passion and drives the work of WFGM.  We invite you to again ask WHY, and respond with your renewed gift allowing us to continue to create HOPE for all in our community.  Thank you for "Giving Back".

PHILANTHROPY

"Philanthropy is not some people's privilege, but everyone's responsibility."

-Susana Barnetche de Martinez

What does it mean to be a philanthropist? A philanthropist is someone who is concerned for the welfare of others or the advancement of a purposeful project through the donation of time, talent or treasures. We are responsible for improving the community where we live and work, and we do not stand alone in this commitment. "We" means all of us ... you, me and our entire circle of friends.

At the Women's Foundation, we believe that everyone can make a difference. During this holiday season, we have two simple and creative ways in which you can give back as WFGM philanthropists:

The first is the Holiday Tribute Card. Honor your friends, family, colleagues or clients with a unique gift that will make a lasting impact for women and children in Memphis. WFGM will mail your card with a personalized message, or we will send blank cards that you personalize and mail yourself. What better way to express the true joy of giving than by celebrating those who have special meaning your life. Order your holiday cards by completing the form online at www.wfgm.org no later than Monday, December 19.

KrogerGiftCardThe second opportunity is through the WFGM Kroger Gift Card Give Back Program. When you sign up to receive a WFGM Kroger gift card, we give you a $5 pre-loaded gift card. You then re-load that card with additional money and use it to purchase groceries, gas and pharmacy items. Kroger donates 5 percent of your purchases to WFGM. The cycle of giving continues each time you shop at Kroger. Buy Now, Give Now and your Purchase Power equals Philanthropy Power! Contact Tracy Burgess or Jacqueline Oselen  to sign up and request your gift card.

LEADERSHIP

2011 Legends Award Honorees

WFGM created the Legends Award to elevate women's leadership by honoring women whose work embodies the mission of the Foundation. Since 2009, we have applauded sixteen legendary honorees whose vision and influence have created a better community through their passion for education, the arts, philanthropy, advocacy, social justice and civil rights. We are excited to host the 2012 Legends Award Reception on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at the Peabody Hotel Memphis. The reception recognizes the efforts of these legendary women and unveils works of art and prose that personify the Legends Award Honorees' accomplishments and contributions to this community. Nominations for our 2012 Legends Award are now being accepted. We invite you to nominate a woman whose accomplishments and dedication have made an impact on the Memphis area.

GRANTEE AND COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Neighborhood Christian Centers

"Because of significant and consistent support by the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis of our Women Empowered to Succeed Program, Neighborhood Christian Centers can target specific needs of women and provide the non-traditional approaches necessary to create an atmosphere these caregivers need to change their current living conditions and future outlook. In 2010, having served 11,867 women agency wide, we recognize the tremendous impact of women in families and communities. Together, we are making Memphis a better place and changing generations - one life at a time."

- Ephie Johnson, President/CEO

NCC in ActionIn the midst of what seems hopeless to many, Neighborhood Christian Centers (NCC) shines a light of hope, striving to break the cycle of poverty and dependence in the Memphis community. NCC experiences success when a mom, who lives in despair, steps proudly forward because she's now working and is receiving guidance and encouragement through one of the life skills and job training programs such as Women Empowered to Succeed (WES). The Women's Foundation has provided grant funding for the past five years for this initiative, which is designed to support and strengthen women in the core life areas of home and work. WES provides the chronically unemployed with opportunities to learn essential skills while they earn points that can be redeemed for transportation, groceries, clothing and more. The program, available at five NCC satellite locations, works with the participants over a period of one to four years and transitions the women through three phases: assessment, career exploration and training in hospitality and customer service fields and finally, employment placement, savings and community support services.

Memphis Goes Green Graduates First Class

MGG GraduateOn September 30, WFGM celebrated the first class of students who completed the Memphis Goes Green program. Twelve Memphis HOPE residents from the University Place, Legends Park and former Cleaborn Homes communities graduated with their Weatherization Auditing certification. These students completed twelve weeks of soft skills training, career development, job readiness and more at Lab Four Green Jobs Training Center. The program is designed to enhance their ability to acquire and retain employment. The weatherization field exercises prepared the participants for their energy auditing certification test. Five of the twelve students are employed and two are enrolled in GED classes. The other graduates are actively seeking career opportunities. Please contact the Memphis HOPE employment specialist, Karolyn Taylor, via e-mail or at 901-544-1348 if your company or organization has potential job openings.
