Health Care Industry Update

For Individuals:
Effective July 1, 2012, maternity will be covered as a standard benefit. We're not sure if this applies to all existing plans or not but we'll know soon and will keep you posted.
For Groups:
Employers must begin to report to their employees the dollar value of their health coverage under employer-sponsored health plans. The Treasury Department and IRS decided to make this reporting optional for 2011 - giving employers more time to make payroll system changes and better prepare for the W-2 mandate for 2012. Let us know if you need help coming up with a system.
The IRS recently issued guidance (IRS Notice 2012-9) to help employers with the mandatory reporting that is scheduled to begin with 2012 W-2 forms. Employers are generally required to give 2012 W-2 forms to employees by January 31, 2013, and then file them with the Social Security Administration.
Important: The reporting requirement is informational only. It does not affect whether coverage is excludable from gross income under the tax code and does not affect the amount includable in income or the amount reported in any other box on Form W-2. It also does not cause otherwise excludable employer-provided healthcare coverage to become taxable.

What Would Lynn Do?

Q: The company I worked for was sold and I was laid off from the job I've held for 10 years. I have a daughter and my only income now is unemployment. What can I do?
A: Here are some options that may occur to you:
- Take Cobra coverage although it is very expensive.
- Take out a temporary policy until I get another job.
- Go without insurance and hope for the best.
- Apply for individual insurance and take my chances.
None of the above.
Unfortunately, Cobra is not an option. When your ex-company was sold, the insurance plan ended. Where there is no plan, there is no Cobra. Individual insurance is actually part of the answer. The other options are only temporary or risky. But there is more that can be done. There is a program in California called "Healthy Families". Because your income now falls within the guidelines of the program, your daughter can be covered in full for only $16 per month.

How Long Will You Live?

This easy and fun calculator estimates your life expectancy. It was developed by Northwestern Mutual Life.
They try to predict how long you're likely to live. It does say that it won't work if you have a long term health issue, but generally it works well. Barring long-term health problems, we're going to live a long time, most of us into our late 80's or 90's.
How will we ever pay for the insurance to cover such long lives? Smarter folks than us are working on these issues. When they figure it out, we'll be here to explain it to you. We promise.
