Health Care Industry Update: Many Opinions on Health Insurance Purchase Mandate
|
 A Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll shows that 67 percent of Americans are opposed to the health reform law's requirement that all Americans buy insurance. Only 30 percent are in favor. The poll also shows that Americans do not expect the law to go away entirely if the Supreme Court rules the mandate is unconstitutional: 55 percent believe that at least part of the law will be implemented and only 30 percent expect a ruling of unconstitutional would mean an end to the entire law.
In general, people remain divided on how they feel about the health reform law, with 50 percent thinking it should stay the same or be expanded and 40 percent thinking it should be repealed outright or repealed and replaced with a Republican alternative.
And in excellent news, according to an article in the Associated Press, the number of young adults lacking medical coverage has shrunk by 2.5 million since the new health care overhaul law took effect, according to a new analysis. That drop is 2� times as large as the drop indicated by previous government and private estimates from earlier this year, which showed about 1 million Americans ages 19-25 had gained coverage.

What Would Lynn Do?

Q: I'm retiring from a large company that doesn't have retiree benefits. I'm only 63 so don't have Medicare. My wife is Medicare eligible but has been covered as my dependent. She has access to a retiree plan from her former company and I have access to one from my employer before the last one. What should we do?
A: Here are some options that may occur to you:
- Put your wife on Medicare and buy a supplement and a Plan D.
- Buy an individual plan for yourself and wait until Medicare -- it's only another two years.
- Sign up for your retiree plan and list your wife as a dependent.
- Have your wife sign up for her retiree plan and list yourself as a dependent.
None of the above.
