Lynn Caffrey, Principal & Gabriel Caffrey, Broker

Providing Clear and Creative Health Insurance Solutions
December 2011

Greetings!

At the end of every year, it is good to look at our successes and lack thereof, both professionally and personally.

For us, it has been a good year.  We've enjoyed relatively good health.  We've been fortunate enough to have had an increase in business and the joy of new relationships.

Gabriel Caffrey joined the business and has evolved into a great resource and broker.

Personally, Lynn and Pat will celebrate 38 years of marriage this month, Gabriel and Sarah married in May and Liz has completed a very exciting year living in London and travelling to many other countries.

We wish for you good health, the joy of family and the success of your endeavors in the coming year.  Our gratitude to you, our clients, is profound and long lasting.  We thank you; we honor you; we appreciate you.

Be well.

Changes for the Better in this Year of Health Care Reform

It rarely seems like there is good news in regards to health insurance, but I have a list for you of things that have changed for the better in this year of health care reform:

  • Preventive services are now paid at 100% with no deductible.
  • Children can no longer be rejected for coverage despite any pre-existing conditions.
  • In 2012 insurance carriers will be required to cover more services for women, including birth control, domestic violence counseling, sexual disease screening and breast-feeding support.
For those of you with high blood pressure from dealing with the stress of dealing with this industry, we have good news!
  • Lipitor became generic as of December 1, 2011 under the name atorvastatin. Thirty-day supply for 20 mg dose will decrease row from approximately $160-$30.

What Would Lynn Do?

Q: Hello. My son has been living in another state, and his plan will not transfer to California when he moves back in January. Unfortunately, he has substantial medical issues. What can we do?

Question Mark

A: Here are some possibilities:

  1. Have him stay where he is, because he will be turned down for coverage here.
  2. Have him go without insurance for six months so that he can qualify for the state preexisting condition plan (PCIP).
  3. Hope he gets a job with benefits.
  4. Have him take his chances and hope he does not need immediate care.
  5. None of the above.

None of the above.

This is without doubt a difficult situation; in this circumstance we are forced to utilize a program which you may not have heard of called MRMIP. It is the original program for high-risk individuals in California, with a high premium and a $75,000 annual maximum benefit.

Despite its shortcomings, this is the plan you will need to enroll him in since you need it to work quickly. He can apply directly online to the carrier and get an immediate declination letter based on his medical history, which you would need to in order to qualify for the program. This is, unfortunately, what you need to do to cover him by the time he arrives home. In the long haul, a company-sponsored plan would be ideal, but in the absence of that, this is the best possible solution.
