EcoNews

The Environmental Studies class, taught by Martha Ellen Wingfield, did computations of before-and-after electricity consumption on campus. Here are their results:

  • Outdoor light electricity usage before retrofitting (from high pressure sodium fixtures): 42,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) per school year, equating to 64,700 pounds of carbon into the atmosphere
  • After retrofitting: 11,400 kWh per school year, or 17,600 pounds of carbon
  • Total school electricity use through lighting before retrofitting:  243,400 kWh per school year, or 374,800 pounds of carbon
  • Total school usage after: 212,800 kWh/school year or 327,700 pounds of carbon
  • So retrofitting the outdoor lights has saved approximately 30,600 kWhs of electricity each year, or 47,100 pounds of carbon from being emitted to the atmosphere.

Also, next month Southern California Edison will begin installation of motion sensors classrooms and Idyllwild Arts will upgrade to programmable thermostats in classrooms and dormitories. This should present favorable returns on our electricity consumption and carbon footprint.

Going Green

"Going green" - it's a fairly large statement and even larger commitment to make. For a school to go green, it involves a lot of thinking, encouraging, perseverance, dedication, and curiosity. More...
The Docent
by Brian D. Cohen
The museum-going experience is so public and open. It's like leaving all the lights on in a concert hall or movie theater, but with everyone else getting in your way. You try not to bump into people or let them block your view.
