EcoNews From HPS to CFL lighting Southern California Edison conducted a preliminary electricity energy audit on campus this fall and will be providing approximately $13 thousand in Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) and motion sensors for campus classrooms as part of their rebate program. We have continued replacing all light bulbs on campus with CFLs, including the high pressure sodium lamps on our pathways and building exteriors. The high pressure sodium fixtures for our pathways cost $350 to install, the bulbs cost $29 each, and they require 70 watts of power. CFLs cost $9 each and use 19 watts of power. This simple retrofit represents a cost savings and reduced carbon footprint of over two thirds the previous impact. The predicted longevity of both types of bulbs and the illumination are the same. The results are similar with respect to our exterior "barn" lighting, which are the lamps attached to the exterior of campus buildings. |

Leave Those Kids Alone
By Brian D. Cohen
When my daughter was entering fifth grade, we went around visiting all the private and public school options within a 45-minute drive of our home in rural Vermont. Most distinctive, and in many ways the most appealing of the schools, was a Waldorf middle school. I liked what I saw until the art teacher expounded an elaborate unified field theory of child artistic and psychological development that forbade students from using the color black, and I said, c'mon, we're leaving.
