|
Greetings! Happy New Year to each and every one of you. I have sent you the Winter issue of our quarterly newsletter, !mpact.
It is with sadness that I mention the passing of longtime Idyllwild Arts supporter Jon Lovelace, without whom IA could not have influenced so many young artists for over fifty years. Of special interest is the headline story about UStream, a new technology for sharing student performances with our off-campus community. I hope you'll also enjoy photos and articles about the accomplishments of Academy and Summer Program students and alumni. Please visit our website and calendar for additional news and events. Yours, Brian D. Cohen President, Idyllwild Arts Foundation |

REAL-TIME LIVE! USTREAM
 |
Elias Sedlmayr and Alex Keller at the Fall Jazz Concert
|
UStream is here. We are most grateful to Trustee Nick Nichols for his initiative and generous support for this important addition to Idyllwild Arts Academy and Summer Program. UStream is an internal broadcasting service that streams video of live performances on the Internet. Over 45 performances have already been recorded. For example, one could choose to watch the Fall Dance Concert: Birds, or the Songwriting Class Concert, or Chamber Music. Students are able to share their performances with friends and family, all over the world, who are unable to attend. Donors can view performances that they support. Alumni are able to maintain contact with their friends. Masterclasses are recorded for future reference.
The Ustream platform allows for chats and has "share" features. Idyllwild Arts is now broadcasting recitals and performances from Stephens Hall and the IAF Theatre. Check the calendar and start watching live shows and recorded video from your mobile device.

JON LOVELACE-THE MAGIC OF IDYLLWILD

With great honor and respect, Idyllwild Arts is celebrating the life a Jon Lovelace. He passed away at his home in Santa Barbara on November 16, 2011. Jon, his wife Lillian, and their extended family have been participants and supporters of Idyllwild Arts (ISOMATA) for well over 50 years.
Founding Head of School and Past President, Bill Lowman said, "I will never forget the pleasure of serving as President when Jon and Lillian were on the board. Jon always asked perceptive questions and offered insightful suggestions. Jon's discreet sense of humor and pleasure in the successes of others were a joy to behold. He enjoyed attending the summer musical theatre program as song lyrics were a love of his from his days at college. We sat side by side at the Children's Center when his granddaughters were performing. I often visited Jon and Lillian "off the hill," and their support was an inspiration to me in my efforts to continually improve the Arts Academy and Summer Program."
Jon led one of the country's largest money management firms, Capital Group. He is known for his "multiple counselor" system where four or more managers would independently run slices of a fund. His generous nature is well demonstrated by his critical decision to spread ownership of privately held Capital away from the family and into the hands of employees.

Jon and Lillian Lovelace
|
In the community, Jon chaired the J. Paul Getty Trust, he was a founding trustee and he served as board chair of the California Institute of the Arts. He helped the Yosemite Fund build and maintain hiking trails including the John Muir Trail.
Most of all, as Bill Lowman explained, he became deeply involved in providing extraordinary philanthropic support to Idyllwild Arts. He and Lillian served on the Board of Trustees of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation for more than twenty years. They provided resources to support Idyllwild Arts in its most important developmental periods, when major investments were needed. He provided support for long-term strategic planning and critically needed expert consultants so that the school could develop in the best possible manner. It is not an exaggeration to note that without the support of the Lovelace family, Idyllwild Arts would not be this extraordinary place of academic and artistic excellence.
Jon, you are the magic of Idyllwild and you will be dearly missed.

SUMMER PROGRAM REGISTRATION BEGINS FEBRUARY 1st Download a sneak peek of 2012 Summer Program Workshops Workshops.
Don't forget to visit the Idyllwild Arts Online Store as you prepare for summertime in Idyllwild.
Idyllwild is a magical place; it's beautiful and refreshing, but most importantly, it makes me want to be better and to improve myself. I worked harder than I have ever worked before during the two weeks in Idyllwild and as a result, I improved a lot. I improved not only my playing skills, but also the attitude I should have to approach a challenge, something that I will always use in life. -Festival Orchestra Participant |

PARALLAX GOES ONLINE

Created, designed, and run by students, Parallax has always championed the high school writer by publishing the best of Idyllwild students' creative writing and visual art. In 2011, the magazine expanded by adding an online component. Edited by the Creative Writing Department, the magazine accepts submissions from high school students worldwide. on developing the website was a tedious, yet extremely rewarding, experience." say editors Becky and Isaac. They go on to say, "Mentors David Shook '04, editor of the World Literature blog Molossus, and Brian Hewes, Director of Digital Media and Marketing at Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB), were incredibly helpful with both designing the website and creating an amusing classroom experience. With David's assistance, editors of the journal and students of the publishing class have been put in touch with upcoming authors for interviews, including John Worley, Maile Maloy, Susie Wild, and the translator of Haruki Murakami's IQ84, Philip Gabriel. Brian's mere presence seemed to make everything on the technical side just work--and with profound results. "

HARRY KILLIJIAN WILL BE MISSED
 | Carol and Harry's visit to campus. Shown here are
Brian Cohen, Harry Kallijian, Carol Channing, and Howard Shangraw |
Idyllwild Arts mourns the loss of Harry, husband to Broadway legend Carol Channing on December 26, 2011. Carol and Harry, friends of Idyllwild Arts, have been promoting arts in education through their non-profit foundation, ChanningARTS.
Carol and Harry made a surprise visit to Idyllwild Arts last September. They enjoyed a tour of campus and lunch with the students in the dining hall. During a recent performance of Ms. Channing's Christmas Show at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, Harry stepped out of a white Rolls Royce onto the stage with Carol. Together they soaked up the lights and applause. Carol was in her element and their happiness transcended to the audience. Jeff Dvorak (Governor of Idyllwild Arts Foundation) remembers how Harry mentioned Idyllwild Arts during the performance. Harry talked about our efforts to bring art programs to high school students, and the problems our society will face if children are not exposed to the arts and the values that come with sharing those experiences.
Harry Kallijian and Carol Channing are an inspiration and model for a life committed to living one's passion, fulfilling one's potential, and giving back to the community.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS ELLIOT MERCER '05
Elliot Gordon Mercer is a professional dancer, dramaturge, and dance scholar. He attended the Idyllwild Arts Academy and began dancing with Company C Contemporary Ballet upon graduation. Professionally, Elliot has performed principal roles in works by such choreographers as Antony Tudor, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Paul Taylor, David Parsons, and Charles Anderson. Elliot graduated summa cum laude from the Liberal Education for Arts Professionals (LEAP) Program at St. Mary's College of California and received an M.A. in Performance Studies at NYU, where his thesis won the Performance Studies Award from the Tisch School of the Arts. Elliot has also received certification in Labanotation from the Dance Notation Bureau.
This summer Elliot spent three weeks in Portugal in residence at the performance festival Escrita na Paisagem and the 16th Bienal de Cerveira, where he was the National Representative of the United States. Over the course of his time at these festivals Elliot reconstructed four evening-length sections of Anna Halprin's The Myths (1967) among other post-modern and audience-participatory dance works from the 1960s.
In August, Elliot took a position at the Juilliard School in Special Projects, where he is working on programs in curriculum development, distance learning, online education, and arts textbook publishing. He is also working with students in the Juilliard Dance Division on staging historic dance works from Labanotation scores. Beginning this spring Elliot will be a lecturer in the New York extension of the St. Mary's LEAP Program. In addition to teaching core curriculum in Dance History and overseeing student theses, he will be both developing and teaching a new course, 'Performing Nationalism: Dance and American Identity,' which will cover choreographic representations of Americana.

LONGTIME FRIEND AND CHORAL DIRECTOR "GIVES BACK" "Do you see what you started, Bee Krone and Idyllwild Arts?" said Mary Val Marsh Twist a few years ago when discussing her designation of Idyllwild Arts as a charitable beneficiary of her IRA fund. "I feel it is my privilege and responsibility to do all I can to keep the inspiration alive and ensure the future of choral music in the summer program." Mary Val, a longtime supporter of Idyllwild Arts, passed away recently, leaving a generous cash bequest and an in-kind donation of music books to Idyllwild Arts. Both gifts are deeply appreciated and serve as an example for other friends and alumni who are motivated to give back to the Summer Program and Arts Academy. But there is much more to the story of this remarkable woman and why she chose to designate Idyllwild Arts in her estate plans. | |
Mary Val Marsh Twist ISOMATA Assistant Choral Director circa 1960
|
For Mary Val, working with ISOMATA co-founder Bee Krone was the inspiration that led to a lifelong passion for music education and a remarkable journey in the musical arts. "Bee could have inspired the rocks to sing," said Mary Val when reminiscing about the daily "Morning Sings" up high in the pines. The two first met in 1950 when Bee and Max Krone were recruiting well-known leaders in music, the visual arts and dance to present an integrated-arts summer program in the mountain community of Idyllwild. Mary Val had graduated from UCLA, received an M.A. in Education from Pomona College, and been offered a consulting position with the San Bernardino County Schools. Together, for two weeks they traveled the county as Bee presented music workshops for elementary school teachers. Following this mentorship experience, Mary Val changed her career emphasis to music education and thereafter spent summers in Idyllwild as an ISOMATA student, teacher, and Assistant Choral Director until 1961. Meanwhile, she worked as a distinguished music educator, consultant and supervisor in the Redlands, San Bernardino and Beverly Hills school districts. Beginning in 1962 after marrying Dr. Dwight Twist, Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools in San Diego, Mary Val spent the remainder of her life in that community. But she credits her experience with Bee Krone and ISOMATA as the foundation for a lifetime of teaching college music education courses, soprano solo performance, consulting and writing. Mary Val co-authored Macmillan Publishing's first music textbook series for kindergarten through grade 8 that was used throughout the United States and Canada for the next 30 years and presented at workshops, conferences, summer classes, and the Music Educators National Conference. |
