Casey View from the Stage
View from the Stage-

Casey Abrams '09

This shot, from Casey's camera phone, says volumes about the warm reception Casey received when he returned home to Idyllwild following the American Idol Season 10 Tour to over 50 cities. The block party event, sponsored by Café Aroma, was a true show of appreciation for all Casey has accomplished.

Casey said the event wasn't a party for him but a thank you to all his fans and their great support. Making up the combo was Lake Jiroudek '12, Nora Germain '09, jazz faculty members, Marshall Hawkins and Paul Carman, and long time Jazz in the Pines performer, Yve Evans. Click here to see a video of the party produced by Idyllwild's own Stephen Savage.

One can only imagine what Casey's life is like after he became an international star. A highlight was meeting his idol, Esperanza Spalding, at her Los Angeles performance on September 30th. She and others have inspired him and as a result he has created his own style which he calls "Rocking up Jazz and Jazzing Down Rock".

Not only is Casey proud to be a graduate of Idyllwild Arts Academy, but he is also proud to be the first IBD Icon for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America. Casey is living with ulcerative colitis and is passionate about building awareness and getting others involved in the campaign called IBD Icons. This summer, hundreds of people living with IBD submitted their personal stories of achievement for a chance to be named an IBD Icon and to win a trip to see Casey perform at the Zappos.com Rock 'n Roll Las Vegas Marathon.

Casey's dreams include making an album, acting, scoring films, singing his jazz and rock, and sitting at his computer composing and orchestrating. Check back here for announcements as he continues his journey towards reaching these dreams.

Idyllwild Arts Receives Coveted
Exemplary School Award

Doug Ashcraft, Dean of the Arts, returned from the Arts Schools Network Conference in Denver with the news that Idyllwild Arts has received the high distinction of being named an ASN Exemplary School. Only four schools in the US have received the honor this year, making a grand total of eight. The Arts Schools Network promotes high quality arts education by acknowledging the values embraced by member schools. This award acknowledges the excellent programs of Idyllwild Arts and for its improvement efforts.

"Kenza" Will Touch Your Heart

Paydar Screen shot Kenza

"We were deeply touched by your film, and we wanted to let you and your production team know in advance of the festival. This was a deeply competitive submission process this year, and we can honestly say that your film was among the cream of the crop."

These are the words of the West Virginia Filmmakers Festival selection committee after viewing "Kenza", an Idyllwild Arts Moving Pictures Department documentary.

In 2009, Kenza Kadmiry, an 18-year-old girl, was hit by a car and became a quadriplegic. In 2010, a group of Idyllwild Arts students began a project to help Kenza make a documentary about her quest to walk again. "Kenza", has been accepted by and was screened at the WV Filmmakers Festival in their Documentary Short program on October 1st. The film is not being shown in the student category, but as an adult submission.

"Kenza" is directed by Cyrus Paydar '13 and Kenza Kadmiry, produced by Devon  Gilpatrick '11 and Cyrus Paydar '13, edited by Moira Burke '12, and the cinematography is by Camille Tso '13. Kenza Kadmiry recently visited Idyllwild and enjoyed seeing American Idol star Casey Abrams '09 perform at his homecoming block party. Photo credit goes to Camille Tso. Summer Program Distinguished Writing Teacher Will be MissedNorm Corwin

On October 18, 2011, writer and radio personality Norman Corwin passed away peacefully at the age of 101. He wrote, directed, and produced some of the most eloquent, powerful radio programs ever broadcast.

He along with others including choreographer Bella Lewitzky, folk singer Pete Seeger, composer Meredith Willson, folk artists Josef Marais and Miranda, painter Francoise Gilot, Native American artists Fritz Scholder and Maria Martinez and photographer Ansel Adams have taught at Idyllwild Arts and helped set the standard for arts education in the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program.

Norman first arrived on campus in 1957 to participate in a Writer's Conference. Steve Fraider, Director of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program, remembers Norman well. He says, "Norman taught here for many, many summers. He taught through the summer of 1998 (the last fivNorman Corwin at IAe summers from his home in LA), when he was a "mere" 88 years old.  He stopped teaching because he was so busy with other projects, he no longer had the time.  Norman also taught throughout the 70's, along with Ray Bradbury. That he had a devoted following was no surprise. He was kind, courtly, witty, erudite and a completely engaged teacher.  He was one of the nicest people I have ever worked with and certainly, one of the most interesting to get to know.  I am truly saddened by his death.  He was one of those people you believe will never die."

His earliest and biggest successes were in the writing and directing of radio drama during the 1930s and 1940s, the Golden Age of Radio. He won a One World Award, two Peabody Medals, an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a DuPont-Columbia Award; he was nominated for an Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay for Lust of Life in 1956. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1993.

To all our donors who are making an impact, a note from a parent of a student beginning her senior year:

"We all want to make a difference in this world - some do it on a national or international scale, achieving fame and fortune. Others do it simply by their generosity. By giving to young students, who then go out into the world with their hearts full and their talents honed, you are making a difference over and over again. Who knows what they each will achieve, but whatever it is, you are a part of it."

New Leadership at Idyllwild Arts

Careful planning and active involvement by the entire Idyllwild Arts community - board, faculty, staff, associates, and alumni - provided a smooth passing of the baton from retired President Bill Lowman to new President Brian D. Cohen who began his duties on July 1, 2011 and has hit the ground running.

Brian is an educator, print maker, and painter. He founded Bridge Press in 1989 to further the association and integration of visual image, original text, and book structure. His books and etchings are held by major private and public collections throughout the country, including Yale, Harvard, Brown, and Stanford Universities, Middlebury, Smith, Wellesley, Swarthmore, and Dartmouth Colleges, the University of Vermont, The New York Public Library, The Library of Congress, and the Philadelphia and Portland (Oregon) Museums of Art, as well as the United States Ambassador's residence in Egypt.

Brian was the first-place winner of major international print competitions in San Diego, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC; he was awarded the Best Book in Show at the Pyramid Atlantic Book Fair, and has received grants from the Vermont Arts Council and the Vermont Community Foundation. He was the founding director of The Putney School Summer Programs from 1987 until 2001, and was the founding artistic director of the Two Rivers Printmaking Studio in White River Junction, Vermont. Brian was an art teacher at The Putney School from 1985 until 2011, and was most recently Dean of Faculty. A book of his work, Brian D. Cohen: Etchings & Books, was published in 2001. He was graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude with high honors from Haverford College and completed his Master's degree in Painting at the University of Washington. Brian is an avid collector of books, prints, and motorcycles, and plays classical viola.

Into the Wild

"Deep in the bucolic oasis of the San Jacinto Mountains lies a sanctuary for students-one of only three independent boarding schools for the arts in the nation. The Idyllwild Arts Academy, a fully accredited high school that produces top-notch graduates headed to some of the world's finest conservatories, grooms adolescent artists for professional, creative careers."

These are the opening words of the cover story for the October 13th edition of the Inland Empire Weekly by Arrissia Owen Turner.

VAMs. Turner offers the reader a chance to become intimately acquainted with Idyllwild Arts Academy. The quotes she includes from President Brian D. Cohen provide insight to the IAA student, the graduate, the Summer Program experience, the history dating back to 1946, and the wonderful support from the extended Idyllwild Arts community.

She includes words from graduate Samuel Chan '11, a classically trained vocalist who now studies vocal performance at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. He says,

"I not only had the chance to be with like-minded individuals who had similar goals as my own, but I also had the chance to meet creative, unique personalities, who offered to me a new outlook and point of view. I found a school that allowed my dreams to come true, while allowing me a place to develop new dreams."

President Cohen Sets Goals for

Environmental and Economic Sustainability

Prefects at the Point

In light of concerns over global warming, diminishing non-renewable resources, and economic uncertainties, we are building into our education program and operations attention to environmental and economic sustainability. We acknowledge that natural systems support all human systems as well as the campus we inhabit, and we pledge to consider environmental responsibility and resource-efficiency in the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and renovation of all our buildings. To achieve the above goals, we have formed committees in Curriculum and Education, Environmental Sustainability, Recycling, Food & Water, Purchasing & Contracting, Energy & Fuel, Building & Campus, Local Community & Outreach.

We realize this is an encompassing collaborative effort, and that confronting these issues will require increased understanding of natural systems as well as reconsideration of our own attitudes and behavior. The campus is united and highly motivated to address these concerns.

Pictured here are the 2011 student prefects during a leadership training.

At 12, Moises joined a gang just as his father had; he earned his stripes by doing as he was told. He doesn't want to talk about his past, but his numerous tattoos silently tell the story. At 15, he was with his home boy in the park and a white car pulled up, a window went down. There was the gun, his friend was down; shot in the lower right abdomen. Moises said he could hear the bullets fly past within inches of his head. It was with this experience that he knew he needed to change his life. He had a choice; he could stay with the gang or find a way out.

Moises found a program called Bienvinedos which helps teens attain goals and stay on a positive track. He got out of the gang and his family moved a hundred blocks away. There still are times other gang members recognize his tattoos. He found Tela Sofa, a non-profit organization run by Juan Escobedo. Tela Sofa created the East Los Angeles Film moisesFestival and that is where Moises received a scholarship to attend the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. Tela Sofa awards one scholarship each year; a program sponsored by Idyllwild Arts board members Tony and Christina Echavarria. His teachers say, Moises did a remarkable job in the 3-week Moving Pictures program this past summer.

In his own words, Moises describes the third week of his experience at Idyllwild Arts. "Post production, my personal favorite! Every cinematographer got to edit the movies they shot. Class started around 9:30 am and ended around 11 pm. After the rough cut, we proofed our work and started scoring music. Everything was a bit stressful because the director was very demanding and things kept changing. The last day of post production everyone stayed up all night in order to finish the film, but it was all worth it, when the very next day our film got shown in a theater and we all got to see our finished product. I was very proud of everyone, our films looked great!!!"

Askim Wins Award for Promoting New Composers

Peter Askim, Music Director and Composer-in-Residence at Idyllwild Arts, has received an award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). The ASCAP award reflects Peter's commitment to assist and encourage composers.

 Peter Askim and Shen Liu

In past New Music concerts, the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra has performed music written exclusively for them by such notable composers as Richard Daniepour, Ezra Laderman, Christopher Theofanidis, Bruce Adolphe, Rufus Reid, Pierre Jalbert, Jan Radzynski, Lawrence Dillon, Roger Myers, and Peter himself. Every spring, the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra performs an exciting program of world premieres.

The film "Absaroka" was screened at the Directors Guild of America as part of the Emerging Cinematographer Awards.
Peter Askim composed the score; it was performed and recorded by the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra.

Peter and the Orchestra have just performed their first concert of the year during Family Weekend at Idyllwild Arts. Featured artists, both from China, were Shen Liu '12 and Ally Manjie Yang '14. Peter is pictured here with Shen.

Elora Hardy '99 Designs Sustainable Homes In Bali

Elora hardy 3Elora has abandoned her successful career in print design at Donna Karan in New York City for a job that will make an impact on the world. She now is CEO and chief designer, leading a team of 130 artisans, craftsmen, and architects to create the most sustainable homes in the world.

She says, "I stretched every artistic Idyllwild-grown limb and pulled out the wooden business leg I didn't know I had." She goes on to say, "Creating spaces where people can feel connected to nature without disrupting it is a thrilling design challenge for me."

The building takes place at Green Village on the edge of the sacred Ayung River Valley near Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. The building materials are 95% bamboo. She says, "At Green Village, you can live lightly on the land and redefine the meaning of luxury with a clear conscience. We use bamboo because of its strength, beauty, and flexibility, and also because with its four-year growth cycle and carbon sequestration capacity - it is the most environmentally-conscientious building material conceivable."

Green Village is within walking distance of The Green School founded by John Hardy, Elora's father. The school accommodates students from nursery to eighth grade and provides a well-rounded holistic education, with a special emphasis on the environment. John Hardy takes much pride from his daughter's choice to join him in what he describes as an amazing journey.

Paavo Jarvi, the music director of the Cincinnati Symphony said, "Liang is a good example of what's right with musical education here at the highest level." Liang holds, among other prestigious positions, the Principal Oboe of the New York Philharmonic. Liang Wang was named honorary professor at the Beijing Central Conservatory and is on the faculty of New York University. "Do what inspires you. Whether or not you go on to a career in the arts, it doesn't matter because life has a way of leading you in unexpected directions. The fact is it is the not knowing what you will be doing in ten years that keeps things interesting."

That statement came from Matt Bissinger, class of 1988, who has the distinction of being the longest continuous alumni donor to Idyllwild Arts. He recalls Idyllwild as a transformative period in his life. He says, "Arriving with the first crop of students ever, my class had a particularly strong camaraderie that comes from being part of something totally new. Looking back, there was a lot of improvisation by the faculty and administration. In many cases, I think the rules were made up only after we broke them, so we were all winging it to some degree."

"I didn't go on to an artistic career but have worked for many years in arts management and continue to remain involved in the arts. I did teach a photography class for a summer which was fun. Art has translated into many areas of my life; Idyllwild Arts gave me the opportunity to do the things I loved. I had not been a stellar student before I arrived at Idyllwild, but being in an arts environment motivated me to be a better student."

Currently, Matt is the Legacy Gifts Officer at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. He is also co-founder and owner of Bae Home & Design, a six-year-old home furnishing and décor business sourcing from local artists and designers. After Idyllwild Arts, he studied at Sarah Lawrence College. He has been a Board Member at Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, worked as a Leadership Gifts Officer at the San Francisco Opera, and subsequently as the Western Regional Major Gifts Officer for Lambda Legal, where he now continues to serve voluntarily on their National Leadership Council.

As a fundraiser for non-profits, giving to causes like Idyllwild Arts is really a very intrinsic thing. He gives because Idyllwild occupied an important part of his life and he values the time he spent here. Matt wants the students at Idyllwild Arts now and in the future to have an equally memorable experience. "The important thing is that even if you can only give $10 per year, your consistent giving adds up over time. That's the bread and butter for every non-profit organization. Even $10 makes a difference over the long haul."
