Color Inspiration Leads to Color Perfection

I recently connected with William C. from Rockville MD to see first-hand his newly painted condo.  Last December we did a To a T color consultation and it took under two hours to pick all 6 colors used in William's condo.

I just had to share the after photos as they are a great example of how paint can create a pulled together look for your home if you have color inspiration in the room when you are picking paint colors. Unfortunately, I did not take any before pics but just imagine builder's grade white walls.

The picture over the fireplace and existing window treatments provided the inspiration for this lovely accent wall.

Buttered Yam also was used in the  Master BR as it played off the window treatments.  The wall art that ties it all together was found after painting.

While it's always best to have some color inspiration in a room when picking paint colors, don't fret if that is not possible.  We can always pick a neutral palette if a home does not have furnishings for inspiration. However, the colors will likely be more of a backdrop than a wow factor because the last thing you want to do is paint yourself into a corner that makes buying the furnishings and fabrics harder than it needs to be.

Design Insights Through Color

Wanted to share a few additional pictures from William's condo to illustrate some design insights at play.  The view from the loft shows how the focal wall accents and grounds the two story living room wall.  Next,  we see how nicely the focal and main colors blend in the dining area.

The guest bedroom was a blank slate when we started (literally, no furniture or fabric in the room).  In reverse order, William used neutral paint colors

( Grege Avenue and Harmony) and then selected the furnishings.  This is a great example of how going neutral with paint allows for maximum flexibility when choosing furnishings.

And one final view of the living room showing how the accent paint color is tied in through place mats, curtains and art (not showing on fireplace wall).

  An Interesting Conversation

I recently overheard this conversation between an Interior Designer (ID) and his Client (C):

ID:  "But those are the colors you always choose and we agreed we were going for a different look and palette in your bedroom.

C:  I know but I reeeaaallly love these colors (jewel tones) and I think this fabric would look great on the headboard.

ID:  But that is going in a completely different direction that we agreed on, is that what you want to do?

C:  Well, I love these colors and think they would look great with the color scheme in my home.

ID:  Yes, that is because you have the same colors in the guest bedroom and your family room.

C:  Is that so bad?

ID:  Not if you want every room to look like the next one.

C:   Well, maybe I can take the fabric home and see how it will look in the bedroom."

In the end they did not check out the fabric that she was drawn to.  I don't think that was the right call.  On the one hand, she had  presumably asked (or otherwise agreed) that they were going in a new direction with the color scheme in her bedroom. But she was obviously drawn to the colors she loves.  It certainly would not hurt to look at the fabrics she liked in the context of her home to rule out more of the same colors she likes and help get comfortable with the idea of a completely different color scheme.

So, will she ultimately be happy with a new color scheme?  Probably not as the new colors were ones the interior designer liked (he was proposing grays and lavenders which are on trend today).  My advice on this is to make certain that you are ready for a palette change that is on trend if it is significantly different from the colors that you love.  That is because colors evoke an emotional response and you won't be happy to live in a bedroom that could be in House Beautiful magazine if you aren't drawn to the colors used in the room.

Q. What advice can you give me on buying window coverings if I can't afford custom made?

A. Window coverings are much simpler today and there are some good off the shelf options (try www.bestwindowtreatments.com).  Consider your needs: privacy, sun/light control or simply decorative.  Panels are the best look and rule of thumb is two panels per side for fulness. Hardware and hanging are also key; look for more on this in next month's newsletter.
