Need to get the pollen off your car? Remember to be storm water wise.
When you wash your car at home, please do so on the grass or some other surface where the soapy water can soak into the ground and won't flow into a storm drain.
Please remember that what we put into storm drain flows to our water supplies.
To learn more, call (919) 567-4011 or e-mail stormwater@hollyspringsnc.us. |

Planning improvements to your property? Installing sheds and pools, including temporary pools deeper than 2 feet, requires permits. For fences, you don't need a permit. But there are rules for them. Our Planning & Zoning folks will guide you through the process. Call (919) 557-3908 before starting work. |

Green Scene We're heading into mid-spring with a plentiful supply and with no restrictions on when you may water your lawn.
Everyday watering permits currently are not needed for seeding lawns or for placing sod. You may use sprinklers and automatic irrigation systems any day. There are no restrictions on washing cars, filling swimming pools, etc. Even so, please practice conservation and avoid wasting water. "Our residents understand that we must be good stewards of our natural resources," Town Manager Carl Dean said. We enter the May through September conservation season at Stage 0. That means there's no drought and the limit on sprinklers and irrigation systems to three times a week is voluntary. To encourage compliance with the rules, we avoid restrictions that are greater than necessary. But that also means that if drought returns, restrictions could go back into effect for as long as needed. Whenever possible, plant drought tolerant, native species in your yard. Also, please do not over-fertilize your lawn.
The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services offers free soil testing services. Test results can help you lessen the amount of fertilizer in storm water runoff. This helps protect our water supplies. Pick up a free soil testing kit at Town Hall in our Engineering offices. As you clean up your yard, please remember to keep limbs, sticks, roots, rocks and other debris out of the leaves and grass clippings pile. We vacuum leaves and grass clippings, and that other stuff can clog the equipment.
Call Public Works at (919) 552-5920 if you have questions about yard waste pickup. |

Knocking for Numbers
If you didn't mail back your official 2010 Census questionnaire, a census taker will be knocking at your door to ensure that all of Holly Springs is counted. A census taker will visit your home up to six times, leaving a door hanger each time. Call the phone number on the door hanger to schedule a return visit.
Census takers are people from your community that the Census Bureau has visit the homes of residents who did not mail back their completed Census forms. Please cooperate with them to ensure an accurate count of our community.
By law, neither the Census Bureau nor any census takers can share your answers with anyone. That includes law enforcement and other federal agencies. The penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
For more on Holly Springs' support of the 2010 Census, contact Gina Clapp, director of Planning & Zoning at (919) 557-3928 or gina.clapp@hollyspringsnc.us. You can also visit www.hollyspringsnc.us/census. |

Clean Up Conveniently
Safely dispose of old paint, pesticides, motor oil, batteries and other household hazardous wastes any day but Sunday. Wake County accepts these materials at its South Wake collection site at 6130 Old Smithfield Road just outside town. It's beside the multi-material recycling facility.
The household hazardous waste collection site is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Last summer, Wake County expanded its collection program to six days a week from twice monthly. Wake County has a second drop-off location in the northern part of the county at 9037 Deponie Drive in Raleigh.
Visit www.wakegov.com for more information. Click on the Recycling & Waste Disposal link under the Living section, then find the Household Hazardous Waste link. You can also call (919) 856-7400 for assistance. |
