Sacramental Preparation

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear POP folks,

This time of the year is enhanced, like bright lights and ornaments on a Christmas tree, with a multitude of sacramental celebrations.

Confirmation and First Communions occur primarily during this Easter season, following closely on the joyful Easter celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation.  Many couples choose to marry around this time because it's not only spring, but it's the month for finishing school, graduating, and starting careers.

As a local Church, we will soon be blessed to witness our former pastor, Bishop George A. Sheltz, ordained a bishop...the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

And, of course, we continue our active healing ministry at Prince of Peace with regular and frequent celebrations of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick.

A Sacrament is a singular moment, an intense, intimate encounter with Christ Jesus in words and physical elements and community faith.  Each Sacrament is rooted in Scripture, flows from the mandate of Jesus himself, and is a channel of life and grace into our struggling world.

If you haven't touched God lately, check out the Seven Spectacular Signs that will pour his love and power into your life!

By Sean-Michael Hazuda, Pastoral Year Seminarian

It is hard to believe that my pastoral year at Prince of Peace is coming to an end this month.  I now understand what the saying "time flies when you're having fun" really means!  It has been such a blessing to get to share in the lives of the clergy, staff, and parishioners at POP...thank you for making me feel right at home.

On May 27, we all will have a chance to celebrate the founding of our first and true home, the Church, when we gather for Pentecost, which means the "fiftieth day" (celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday).  This special day in the lives of Christian faithful marks the birth of the Church when the Risen Lord filled His Apostles with the power of the Holy Spirit so they could boldly go forth and preach the Good News to the ends of the Earth.

According to Scripture, Pentecost occurred 10 days after Jesus ascended into Heaven. While the Apostles and Jesus' mother and family were indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and the Holy Spirit was poured-out upon them just as the prophet Joel had predicted in the Old Testament (Joel 2:28-29). Read more...
