Dear Friends,
The New Year brings some wonderful new changes and exciting ventures on the horizons for me as a writer. I am super pleased and excited to announce the release of my new novel El Patron. If you love a good family saga with all of the drama, romance, grit and roller coaster of a ride that a good family saga provides, then this is one you won't want to miss.
My women's fiction Happy Hour has been out for a few months now and readers have been e-mailing me, letting me know they are loving it. Book clubs have been inviting me to come and talk about the book and drink wine with them. Sounds good to me!
For those of you who haven't picked up a Michaela Bancroft mystery (a.k.a. The Horse Lover's Mystery series) because you aren't a horse lover, well, that's okay. I think though, if you did read one of these mysteries, you would be pleasantly surprised as these mysteries ar not just for those of us who are passionate about the horse. If you haven't read about Michaela Bancroft and her crazy slew of friends (both of the two-legged and four-legged variety) you might want to give them a chance. For the first time these books are out in trade paperback and available on the amazon kindle at amazing prices (under three bucks).
Also for A Toast to Murder is out in April, and is currently one of the Authorbuzz feature books of the month. It's the sixth Nikki Sands' Mystery and it's a lot of fun. I'll be at Mysterious Galaxy Book Store in San Diego on April 12th at 7:00 sharing the spotlight with Peter May who I am a fan of, so I'm excited to meet him!
Here's something all readers can get excited about! FREE STUFF! Look for freebies, gift certificates and more! Read all about your book club's opportunity to receive a $200.00 gift card to the book store of your choice, or an individual reader can win a $20.00 gift card.
And for a fun easy recipe to try out, take a shot at this month's featured recipe out of "Happy Hour."
Tomorrow night (Wednesday February 25th) I will be chatting with readers online at http://www.writerspace.com. I hope you will join me, where I'll be chatting about El Patron, Happy Hour, the mysteries, etc!
Cheers,
Michele |

El Patron

What began as an innocent love affair for one young woman, Marta Peña, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 1969, sets in motion a series of events that spans the next thirty years. This is the story of South American drug lords Antonio Espinoza and Javier Rodriguez, and their violent quest for power. In a sweeping family saga, we meet the women who love them and the children they vow to protect at any cost.
With a complex web of interconnected families, this gritty novel delves into the lives of a power hungry clan, following the rise of their business, the destructive path of their torrid and erotic love affairs, and the struggle to balance intense greed with devout family loyalty.
Strong women face tragedies that test their will and their commitment to the men they passionately desire. As young girls grow into women, their traumatic pasts will drive their actions and force them to make gut-wrenching decisions.
With murder, drug trafficking, dirty politics, illegal gambling, prostitution, obsessive love affairs, and family strife, El Patrón is a whirlwind in the vein of Mario Puzo's The Godfather.

What am I working on?
If you don't know by now, It's kind of obvious that I am one of those horse crazy women. I was a horse crazy kid and suffice to say that it has not changed (maybe it's even gotten worse with age) over the years. I love to ride and I love to write, so it's only natural for me to want to write horse related stories. As a sidenote, my day job is at my family business where we manufacture all sorts of very cool horse products to make the life of the horse more happy and comfortable. You can check us out at http://www.profchoice.com.
At this stage of my writing career, I'm focusing on the loves of my life--horses and kids. I run a writing program for kids ages 9-13 in my hometown and I find their enthusiasm and passion to write completely inspiring. So, what I'm writing these days is all about kids and horses. I have a new blog at http://bit.ly/9TgozD
where I'll be posting up horse stories, etc for kids.
I am currently writing a young adult novel about 17 year old Vivienne Taylor who receives a scholarship to the prestigious Fairmont Academy where she believes she is on her way to one day achiving her goal of being on the Olympic Team. Thing is Vivvie isn't like the other kids. Vivienne has a unique gift--she can telepathically communicate with horses. When Vivvie's new horse Harmony comes into the picture a mystery surrounds the horse. She is the first horse ever that Vivvie can not get anything from. Does the horse have a grievance toward her new owner, or is Harmony hiding a secret that she knows if exposed could lead to Vivvie's murder? Check out the book trailer at http://bit.ly/KKyP3

Feauture Recipe from Happy Hour:
Kat's Fettucine, Goat cheese and Pancetta.
1 cup dry white wine 2 Tbs. minced shallots 5 oz. goat cheese, at room temperature, cut up or crumbled
Salt and freshly ground black pepper Pinch crushed red chile flakes 1/2 lb. dried fettuccine ½ cup chopped pancetta or bacon (you can also use chicken or shrimp) 2 Tbs. olive oil 4 oz. fresh baby spinach (about 6 cups) 2 Tbs. chopped fresh basil
In a medium saucepan combine the white wine, shallots. Over high heat, reduce the liquid by half, about 5 minutes. Whisk in the goat cheese until the mixture is smooth, season with 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. pepper, and the red chile flakes, and set aside.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook until just cooked, 9 to 11 minutes. Reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta water, drain the pasta, and set aside.
Heat 1 Tbs. of the olive oil in a sauté pan over medium-high heat brown up pancetta or bacon (if bacon there is no need to use the olive oil until you add the spinach). Add the remaining 1 Tbs. olive oil and the spinach and sauté until it's wilted, about 2 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine the pasta with the goat cheese sauce; add the spinach and pancetta. Season with salt and pepper and serve in warm bowls, topped with the basil.
This recipe would pair nicely with a pinot noir or lighter syrah. If you prefer a white wine chardonnay would work well. |
