Duck on Pasture | This month has been busy and HOT! We got the sheep sheared, added Woodbine Farmers Market to our weekly itinerary, started summer calving season and Bobby, our full time farm hand of 4 years, left for another job (it was too good to not take and we wish him only the best!).
We got 2 new livestock guard dogs for the sheep and 26 new sheep (a different breed, Dorpers) and two college guys are painting the house!
I have a new calf in the yard, his name is "Al," and he gets a bottle 3x each day. He likes to hide lying in tall grass where it is cool. Just yesterday he got a new friend to live with him. He doesn't have a name yet--any suggestions???? |
FARMERS MARKET NEWS
- We have a limited supply of lamb cuts back in stock: lamb chops, cubed lamb, ribs and shanks. If you have been looking for lamb, NOW is the time to buy as we will not have more lamb until September. (Sorry, but no ground lamb.)
- If you still owe a balance on your Summer Meat CSA subscription, please don't forget that the balance was due by August 1.
- Beef Summer Sausage is back in stock!
- You may not know it but we also have a Beef Breakfast Sausage (hot or mild) for families who don't eat pork!
- Due to the shortage of eggs (hens don't like to lay in the heat; can't really blame 'em...) and the number of customers not picking up pre-ordered eggs, we will no longer hold eggs that are not prepaid.
- This last processing we inadvertantly ended up with a large number of small chickens. We normally don't sell birds that weigh less than 3 1/2 pounds; these birds weigh 2-3 pounds each. they aren't listed specifically on the web site, but if you'd like one or more of these small chickens, please let us know by phone or email. They are a nice size for halving and grilling.

As the processors continue to raise their prices, we have little choice but to pass on the costs due to our low profit margins on the bulk and volume products. But you still have time to save! For the month of August 1/4 beef with our standard retail cuts, 75-90 pounds, $5.65/pound. September 1 the price will increase to $5.95/pound, so order now!

Jenny's Fave Summer Supper
1 pint cherry or Roma tomatoes
1 tsp. minced garlic
1-2 Tbsp. fresh basil, snipped
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. dried red pepper
2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 pkg. Peaceful Pastures Italian sausage
1 pkg. (16 oz.) pasta (I like vermicelli or linguini)
Preheat oven broiler. Slice tomatoes in half lengthwise, and slice sausage into 1/2" round and toss with all ingredients except pasta. Place 4" (or more) under broiler and put water on to heat for pasta. Stir oven ingredients every 5 minutes or so, and cook pasta according to label directions. It usually works out that the pasta and the meat finish cooking at the same time. Toss together and serve! Makes 4 hungry adult servings.
Note: You can also prepare this on the grill! Use a grill proof pan and cover the grill to savor the smoked flavor. Cook the pasta on the side burner. Sure saves heating up the kitchen!!
