Peaceful Pastures now has a page on Facebook! Be sure to sign up as a fan!  This is where you will find weekly updates on the farm (it replaces the "Daily Diary" section on our web site). You'll read about animals, new births, mishaps and both daily joys and trials.

Sheep in snowFarm Notes

Last weekend we got our first real snow in 3 years: four inches of snow topped with 1/2" of sleet, then another 1/2" of snow. As usual, the animals fared better than the humans! Most of the livestock did not even seek shelter. Darrin made sure all of them had plenty of hay before the snow began to fall, once that was done, he and I curled up indoors with good books to wait it out.
We got some sad news last week; Seven, the dog who was featured in last month's newsletter has a chronic disease which will greatly shorten her time with us.  The Rainbow Bridge will have another pup trotting across within the next few months. In eth meantime, she is enjoying a new, meat and egg rich diet and is more happy and active than ever.
On Valentines' Day we will celebrate our 17th anniversary! It's hard to believe so much time has gone by.
The web site is back up--sort of. It turns out we lost over 40 pages that were linked in. We are slowly getting it back in order. If you go to the site and cannot find what you need, PLEASE email or call us.

ATLANTA CSA!
We are working hard to make an ATLANTA CSA drop off a reality! This is a great way to save money on our products during a tight economy. This is still in the works and we MUST have a minimum (50) number of subscribers, but as it stands today:  the above 3 CSAs will be offered, the drop off will be at Improveat, one Friday each month (May-October) from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The March newsletters, snail mail and Constant Contact will have more information.
Baby pigs Baby pigs!

Here is our litter of baby pigs, pictured at about 10 days of age! They are way too cute and very squirmy right now. They are in a stall, deeply beeded in hay under a heat lamp. Their mother has free roam of half the barn and two or three times each day she goes outside for a long walk and exercise.
Joe Booker Stew
1 Peaceful Pastures chuck roast, cut into 1" cubes
1 pound Peaceful Pastures bacon (optional)
1 quart beef stock, broth or consomme
4 cups water
2 onions, diced
3 tsp. dried thyme
1 1/2 pounds potatoes
1 pound carrots
1 rutabaga
2 parsnips
2 sweet potatoes

Partially thaw chuck roast,  remove bone and cut into 1" cubes. Peel all root vegetables and cut into 3/4" cubes. Thaw bacon and place into large dutch oven or stock pot and lightly brown on low to medium heat to extract the drippings (this step is optional for those who do not eat pork.) Leaving bacon strips in the pan, add onion and beef and stir over medium high heat until browned. Add liquids and thyme and simmer, covered for 1 hour. Add vegetables and more water, if necessary, and continue to cook for 1 hour or until vegetables are done. Remove strips of bacon before serving.

Jenny's note: I was surprised at how excellent this stew is! The flavor is very rich and it is a great way to sneak root veggies into a meal. Leftovers freeze well.
